I wondered if leaking Caroline's journal would have consequences, as it was an obvious attempt to discredit her in the court of public opinion.

Comment Can we cancel the term "Lifehack"? (Score 4, Insightful) 338

Everything is a lifehack these days. The term is meaningless.

"Skip-lagging" isn't a lifehack, it's exploiting the special cases of a system and it makes things more expensive for everyone.

A flight with a layover is a direct flight when considering folks departing from the layover city. Skip-lagging just makes it more difficult for regular folks to find reasonably price air tickets.

Geneva, IL (I guess you worked at Fermilab and CERN) is almost 50 miles from downtown Chicago so complaing that you only have commuter service there is pretty unfair. The public transit in Saint-Genis-Pouilly is pretty bad too, and that is much closer to Geneva, Switzerland than Geneva, IL.

Why does the summary say this:

Glover, 46, is a Navy captain, a father of four and one of only a half dozen African Americans in NASA's astronaut corps

By saying "one of only a half dozen", the summary certainly gives the impression that the number of African Americans in NASA's astronaut core is inappropriate.

However, according to Wikipedia, there are 41 astronauts in the NASA astronaut core. This means, if the summary is correct and there are 6 African American astronauts, then 14.6% of the astronauts in the NASA astronaut core are African American.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NASA_Astronaut_Corps/

Since the percentage of African Americans in the US is 12.1 percent, this indicates that African Americans are overrepresented in the NASA astronaut core.

What, then, is the point of saying "only"?

I also read video game magazines religiously in the mid 80s to the early 90s. I read every ad, but I can't think of a single game I hadn't heard of that I was moved to buy because of the ad. (I also was a kid so had limited purchasing power, but what I did buy was word-of-mouth or a really hyped game).

Ford has spent an enormous amount of money to only sell 1336 F-150 Lightnings. Shareholders might not agree with you.

Your comment illustrates the exact point I am trying to make. The low number of F-150 Lightnings sold reflects the challenges of manufacturing a different type of car than Ford is used to, not a lack of consumer interest.

The shareholder focus on profits today, dammit!, is a counterproductive long-term strategy. If Ford doesn't make a successful transition to EVs, they are doomed. This transition is difficult and bumpy. but totally necessary.

The only companies "allowed" by shareholders to lose significant amounts of money to build out new technologies are startups, and that is why Ford is trying to sell itself as a startup in this case.

It is very shortsighted.

It amazes me that the business world has been so financialized that the now quaint concept of "invest money today to earn profits in the future" requires explanation. That is exactly what we want companies to do when new opportunities arise, especially ones with a strong incentive to resist change.

Ford is doing it right.

If they can't write out their value proposition in a few clear sentences an adult of average intelligence can understand, it is wise for regulators to be cautious.

As it stands, many of these DeFi outfits are offering unsustainable returns in excess of the interest they charge on loans and these returns are far in excess of what you can earn in the traditional finance market.

Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence. These products smell like Ponzi schemes, and wrapping them up in mumbo-jumbo like liquidity staking, flash loans, and so on doesn't help their case. These new players need to explain, in precise terms, where the money is coming from to pay such high interest rates, and how this can be sustained.

The burden of proof is on these new operators.
