Comment Are kids even buying cigarettes? (Score 1) 241

So, where I live, cigarettes aren't advertised, and are kept behind the counter in a closed cabinet in shops. Vapes however are openly advertised, and easily available.

My personal observation is that I never see kids smoking these days. I do see a lot of vaping though. And this law doesn't cover vapes.

I expect this will be deemed a success, and a negligible number of kids born after 1st January 2009 will take up cigarettes but I think we're heading that way anyway.

Yeah - EU members do see people near borders avoiding taxes this way. It's apparently similar in the US - there are always shops right on state borders selling things that aren't legal in a neighbouring state.

Still, I think given that tobacco will be effectively banned in NZ, it will be a bit different. Not many people are going to go to another country just to try cigarettes. Even if an EU country tried this I'd expect it to be pretty effective for anyone not right by the border.

Of course there will be a black market. There will always be a black market. Still, I think an imperfect solution is still a positive thing.

Maybe I'm just old, but back in my day, everyone with a computer was cheerfully swapping floppy disks at school. I must have had several hundred games for my Amiga and bought about 10 of them.

Definitely a lot of opposition but I wonder if some of these ideas will appeal to some users. Those whose brand is very twitter centred might see $8 a month a pretty reasonable fee to pay.

Comment Software licences have always been a hack (Score 1) 31

We shouldn't have licences at all. A sensible form of copyright law would give us the inherent right to install and use the software we've actually bought! And we should be able to argue this as "Fair use"

But the rights aren't explicit. So this means that publishers have had to grant a "licence", and they've made sure to offer as few rights as possible.

I can accept the term "flying car" since it's designed to be used in a similar manner to a car (i.e. door to door travel). It's one of those definitions that requires a bit of squinting but it sort of makes sense.

Actual flying cars have always been a dead end. Planes need too many compromises to make them into worthwhile road vehicles.

Comment Re: Weird, in the US having a pool tanks your valu (Score 1) 126

That's the ideal. But to do that we should really go for a Land Value tax, where we tax the undeveloped property value.

There are a few countries that have no property taxes. Mostly these are petro states where the commonly held limited resource is oil rather than land like it is everywhere else.

They do seem to be mostly places with low taxes otherwise. Although a bunch of these are mostly desert, where there's plenty of land.
