Submission + - Anonymous hacks FTC website OnGuardOnline.gov (fcw.com)

sanzibar writes: The online collective Anonymous on Jan. 24 claimed credit for hacking a Federal Trade Commission website aimed at helping consumers with cybersecurity advice, OnGuardOnline.gov.

The website is managed by the FTC and hosted in partnership with several federal agencies. The consumer protection agency reported the hack publicly on Twitter and Facebook and has taken the website offline for assessment and repairs.

Early on Jan. 24, the hacking group initially replaced the OnGuardOnline website’s front page with its own logo, according to an article in TheNextWeb.com.

New submitter turkeyfish writes "UK scientists are reporting today in the journal Nature Geoscience that a huge bulge of freshwater is forming in the Western Arctic Ocean caused by a large gyre of freshwater. The gyre appears to indicate that the ice is becoming thin enough over the Arctic Ocean that the wind is beginning to affect the motion of water under the ice. A sudden release of this water or its emergence to the surface will greatly accelerate the melting of the remaining polar oceanic ice and likely alter oceanic circulation in the North Atlantic."

First, your link did not address anything. Second, the link you ignored directly addresses your false claims.

I know it must be scary for you venture off the cult reservation but you really need to step out. As the updated 30yr trends start to roll out, i think you will find some surprising results. Your high priests are looking and they are freaking out about it. So many lies, bad models, failed predictions. Propaganda machine is kicking into overdrive.

Hugh Pickens writes "Ira Winkler says whenever he sees another 'cyberchallenge' getting play in the press, he think our priorities are screwed up. 'People seem to think that organizing teams of people to hack into systems is a way to bring together the best computer talent to square off against each other,' writes Winkler. 'I look at it as a waste of that talent.' That's why Winkler supports Facebook's latest Hacker Cup, which has become one of the few tests of creative computer talent. Facebook is using the original definition of 'hacker,' referring not to someone who breaks into computer systems, but rather to an individual who 'enjoys exploring the details of programmable systems and how to stretch their capabilities.' Facebook's contest consists of successive sets of increasingly difficult algorithmic problems. Scoring will be based on how accurately and quickly the programmers complete the puzzles. 'Meanwhile, the media effectively lionize groups like Anonymous by breathlessly reporting on their latest hacks,' writes Winkler. 'What we really should be doing is not to reward a handful of students to find problems, but to train all students, and inevitably the profession, to integrate security into their efforts from the start.'"

How imperialistic of you. So how do you justify the drone attacks by your own country?

I seem to recall more than one recent assassination by your country, illegal arms shipments, torture, secret prisons... we could go on and on.

And since your so educated on Israel politics, please explain how Israel should respond to constant missile attacks, threats by neighboring countries and well funded enemies who's stated purpose and goal is the total destruction of their country. Please contrast this with your own countries policies and recent actions.

His argument is that in order to sell people on hybrid cars, automakers have emphasized the energy efficiency of hybrids in ideal conditions and failed to tell people that in most ordinary driving conditions they will not come close to meeting the numbers given. He refers to a recent case where an individual has chosen to forego membership in a class action law suit and has instead chosen to go to small claims court. He suggests that there is a significant chance that she will win there and that this will open up all of the manufacturers of hybrid vehicles to similar lawsuits. The article was on a rather partisan website, so I am curious what factors he has chosen to overemphasize to make his case. (Or what factors he has chosen to ignore to the same end.) I know that Slashdot has a large contingent of hybrid and EV supporters who are well educated on the subject (as well as a large contingent of those who are not so well educated)."

'The big problem is that the QR code to a human being is nothing more than "that little square with a bunch of strange blocks in it." There's no way to tell what is behind that QR code.' The advice we've always given to the computer user community is 'don't click a link in an email if you don't know who it's from or where it goes' — so how do we protect unsuspecting users from QR codes, where you can't see the destination at all?"
