While creating patent free and open source solution has little aplication in an Apocalypse scenario it does in the real world right now. An example is that patent free and open source modern farming could be deployed in the third world right now.

Not really but you got to admire the level of stupidity of the DOJ in this. Win this argument and you might as well have killed the Internet as we know it. Actually no it won't kill the Internet but it sure will kill investment in cloud infrastructure based in the US. Way to kill off local jobs just to suck the dicks of the MPAA!

It might not be all that energy efficient yet but if it solar powered and you can build these factories inside cities it would help clean up the air. Provided you can mass produce the factories it one of the first step toward terraforming the planet to reduce climate change or more likely reduce human impact on climate change.

Most of the Linux desktop environment are so similar that the learning curve barely exist. It vendors lock in that keep Microsoft on top. To break that will require massive marketing, lobbying for more government and education institution to go Linux and maybe a push for legislation to force Government contract bid to consider OSS solution on equal footing with Microsoft and Apple. Unless the OSS community stop squabbling over all sort of bullshit debates and find the money to do these things. Linux will remain the little secret of a few happy users.
