Comment Re:Isn't Flash extinct? (Score 0) 199

The one reason that flash does not run on the iPhone is that a man with a black collar did not want all kind of flash games on his phone, he wanted to sell those games native from the app-store, and take a percentage on that.

But since flash is no longer a 99% cross platform solution people tend to look for solutions that are more cross platform.

(beside that, linux and android run old version that i doubt about security..)

" CAs used to be meticulous about who they signed certs for.". what you say may be misunderstood., what signing is used for in most of the times. They sign that you are who you say you are. Not about who. you can get crooksincorperated.com, or mikerowsoft.com signed very simple if you own the corresponding domain. Even if it is signed you might not be able to find the owner of that site. The certificate only proves the data is not modified.

What went wrong here is that MCS got the certificate to create more certificates, and MCS did not protect that cert very well. You know what happened in egypt with internet? It got monitored to be very simple. Maybe with help of the MCS proxy device.

It also assumes a normal failure of drives. However modern drives do not always fail normal. They develop slow spots, timeouts from which they might recover.

Also the software to create the redundancy might fail, of it might fail if you do not update the firmware.

And I am not even talking about catastropic failure. When a drive overheats you might want to remove it from the datacenter.

You are not wrong, but the point is that parralel system can scale the number of cpu's ftom 4 to 1000. However the same locking mechanisms used for 4 way parralelism are not useful in 1000 way parralelism. You need different techniques then. The linus rant is pointeda current programming techniquess that scale to 4-16 cores, but start to loose a lot of efficientcy at more cores.

By the way, some synamic pipeway already exists a long time. Think about hyperthreading. 2 threads share1 core. second thread is optional to keep the cpu busy when one thread could not. Also cache might be local to one or more cores. This is also a way of dynamic pipeline.

Exactly

Big data is a different thing from datawarehousing.

In a big data scenario you have lots of data, that you process with a highly scalable solution.

In a databasehouse you collect data from different sources and transform them in several steps to a datamodel you can create reports from it in a simple way. .

And there is the other option you just have to process lots of records from a simular source (measuring data), where you carefully monitor and tune the processing of that data.

The question does not even make a difference between this. Most of the above options are not a single person job if you want it done in a reasonable timeframe(that is before business needs catch up).

The hardware depends on the size of the data. hardware sellers are happy to sell their high-end servers with a scaleable SAN, for a price you can buy a mid class car, or even a price that is not listed. But depending on your needs a simple dell server with a good backup facility under 1000$ might suffice.

no way to tell

PS, "services" might be a way to convince you that that the solution needs to run in the cloud (to complete the buzzworld cicle) or a way to sell consultancy hours.

There currently is economic benefit to tune a ship for better emissions. Even putting it in a harbour for 2 weeks to tune the engine (don't know if technical possible) will set the owner back a lot of money. He will not do it just for emision.

You will not need large innovations. Clean emisions is already understood, and used in power plants. YOu just need motivations.

Almost there. Wolfse made part of the GPL code. However the Bukkit project is not gpl compliant because the entire code contains decompiled java server code. What wolfse thinks is since the project is not GPL compliant, (part is gpl, part is just working) he can put in a dcma. However his code is GPL, so he cannot withdraw that license.

Mojang is the copyright holder of the server code, he surely would be able to put in a take down request.

This is like linus putting a takedown request at redhat because their kernel is linked to non-gpl driver blobs to force nvidea to open source their drivers.

The problem is the risk: fighting this DCMA takedown requires expensive lawyer, and there is a small risk that wolfse has some reasoning that a court will agree with. In that case the costs will be so high, that the "in their free time"projects would make them bankrupt or something like that.
