Comment Fence Burns (Score 4, Funny) 277

"MacHeads is a superb film that will give Apple haters a few cheap laughs, and Apple fans a few cheap thrills. But it'll entertain both equally, while educating everybody else."

Wow, that's such a fence-sitting position that it's probably hard on their butts. It's as if they don't want to offend anyone. "While World War II was indeed a deadly conflict, it gave the Allies a few cheap laughs, and the Axis a few cheap thrills, but it'll kill both equally." I think I can use this for my upcoming performance review...

It is the first of Scalzi's sci-fi novels written intentionally as young adult fiction.

Where are his unintentionally written young adult fiction novels? I bet they are much more fun to read.

Submission + - ADA and Web Sites (computerworld.com)

grassy_knoll writes: Since the lawsuit filed by the National Federation of the Blind has just been granted Class action status, do you have any plans to ensure your web sites are ADA compliant?
It seems not all web sites must be:

Goldman said it's unclear what other Web sites might be covered by the ruling. "This doesn't mean that the ADA applies to all Web sites, but on the other hand, if there's a bricks-to-clicks type of business and there is some integration of the experience between the two, I think the court is saying that those sites need to comply with the ADA," he said.

Although there is certainly a push towards that:

Marc Maurer, the President of the National Federation of the Blind, said in a statement. "All e-commerce businesses should take note of this decision and immediately take steps to open their doors to the blind."
So, do you have any plans to ensure your sites are ADA compliant?

Submission + - SPAM: 16 greatest moments in Web history

alphadogg writes: Depending on how you calculate it, the Web has been around for between 15 and 17 years — which makes it old enough to ask for the car keys, but still an awkward teenager growing toward maturity. Yet it already has a long and storied history (and some prehistory). PCWorld here chronicles its 16 greatest moments. [spam URL stripped]
It's funny. Laugh.

Submission + - Copier that Auto-Translates Japanese to English (digitalworldtokyo.com)

StCredZero writes: Wild. Fuji has created a Photocopier that Automatically Translates Documents from Japanese to English. That's pretty nuts. Apparently, the copier can figure out what sections are text, OCR the text, send it to a translation engine, and put the English back into place. As if documentation produced in Asia wasn't Bad Enough!

Submission + - Are animated web ads too intrusive? 1

An anonymous reader writes: I've noticed a worrying trend over the past six months: full motion video adverts in web pages containing otherwise static text. Additionally, some adverts feature strobe-effect flashing. These ads from major corporations make reading the web page impossible — I've just given up on a Salon page after I had to resize it every which way to try and hide a movie advert that flashed from negative to positive every second and destroyed my concentration each time. The question is: Are web page advertisements going too far? Should there be a code of conduct that keeps ads relatively discreet? How can we fight back without denying websites invaluable revenue by using indiscriminate ad-blockers?

Submission + - iPhone 1.1 software update available from iTunes

Acrobatman writes: The much-anticipated 1.1 iPhone update has been released via the iTunes update feature. This 153 MB update provides featureset parity with the iPod Touch including WiFi iTunes purchasing No word yet as to whether this is the famed "brick your modded iPhone patch" but my initial usage of it seems to have improved the responsiveness of some of the menus as well. This update requires a re-activation once installed, so it may well be the iBrick http://hardware.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=07/09/25/0155219 update that has been much discussed.

Submission + - UK Performers & YouTube Reach Royalty Deal (monstersandcritics.com)

eldavojohn writes: "YouTube has agreed to pay a blanket fee to the MCPS-PRS Alliance to license more than ten million works of music. While there's no mention of what this flat fee is, it will be interesting to see if this is just a deal too good to pass up or an admission of need to license works from YouTube. It also remains to be seen if licensing these songs will cascade to the users and the content they own on YouTube."

Submission + - Corsair Padlock USB Drive, Built-In Combo Keypad

MojoKid writes: "With data and identity theft so prevalent today, an ever increasing number of users are concerned about securing their personal data. Corsair, however, just launched a new product that may hold the key to easy and convenient data security, literally and figuratively. The Corsair Flash Padlock functions much like any other USB thumbdrive, but it features a built-in keypad for entering a PIN code that locks or unlocks the data stored on the device. Without the PIN, the data cannot be accessed. This article highlights the main features of the Corsair Flash Padlock and profiles its performance. It looks like the Flash Padlock works as advertised, but transfer speeds aren't stellar."

Submission + - Arbitrary deletion of Wikipedia entry

An anonymous reader writes: There is a storm in a teacup brewing over at the Eastgate Systems Wikipedia page. Eastgate is one of the leading hypertext publisher and is also responsible for hypertext tools such as Tinderbox and Storyspace. As described at Eastgate Systems' chief scientist Mark Bernstein's blog , a Wikimedia legal intern seems to have taken it upon himself to delete the article stub associated with Eastgate. When queried about his expertise on hypertext and his rationale for nomination of the article for deletion, his defense is simply "I do not need to. No special knowledge is needed to edit wikipedia."

Submission + - FBI snaps up Napoleon III's gun from online sales (networkworld.com)

coondoggie writes: "The FBI doesn't usually find itself in the business of retrieving guns but last week it made an exception: a rare Gastinne Renette carbine taken from a Paris military museum during World War II while the Germans occupied Paris that once belonged to Napoleon III. French authorities have searched for the 37-inch gun ever since and when it popped up on the Web site gunsamerica.com, French officials contacted Interpol, which in then enlisted help from the FBI.An undercover operation was initiated by local FBI agents, and agents from the FBI's Art Crime Team, which resulted in the safe recovery of the weapon last week. The Art Crime Team is the FBI's 12-member rapid-deployment unit responsible for investigating cases involving cultural property and artwork. To date, the Team is responsible for recovering more than 850 items worth more than $65million. http://www.networkworld.com/community/node/18373"
