Comment Having worked on the Census, this needs to be done (Score 2) 62

I worked on the 2010 Census as your typical door-to-door person. From the bottom up, it's unorganized. There's reams of paper for each task and work is somewhat uncoordinated. Despite what some may think, the people who worked it were generally capable and intelligent, but the lack of technology and stacks of paperwork were just begging for errors (which occured often). I wouldn't go so far as to say the collection process should be abolished in favor of statistical inference, but it could be done far more efficiently (and cheaply).

Solar Car Speed Record Smashed 72

An anonymous reader writes with word from Australia that "There's a new world record for the fastest solar-powered land vehicle: 88 km/h average speed over one kilometre in a lightweight car that uses about the same power as a toaster." As the article goes on to explain, this solar racer, built last year by students from the University of New South Wales, managed to nab that speed record earlier this month on an Australian navy base airstrip.

Submission + - TIME Backpedals on Betelgeuse (time.com)

Lyrata writes: In an article written with the scientific authority of a HeadOn commercial, TIME (via the Huffington Post) predicts that the Earth may have two suns by 2012. Although the article currently contains a number of hilarious claims, more interesting are the even more ridiculous "facts" that have since been removed. A look at the comments reveals a few of these, among them claims that Betelgeuse is the second largest star in the universe and neutrinos causing the formation of gold and silver. With links to some form of this article being found on TIME, CNN, and Fark, what does this say about journalistic integrity on the Internet?
