Preach it. Any job where you're the guy that has to fix it... the challenge is a HUGE learning opportunity. Evil boss or no. I've worked for a glory seeking back-stabbing boss before. That in itself is a good learning experience about how to appropriately protect your flank while still being able to do your job (and what kind of boss not to be). All that prior experience helped get me the job I have now, and it just happens to be for a great boss. I'm always in a constant state of character and job skill development. When it no longer is learning opportunity, find another job. Never burn bridges. Ever.

I'm a fan of the apple products as well. Now if they wanted that Apple TV to make a killing, they should have put a USB or firewire port on there so that those that do want to manage space and have local content... could do so. Let advanced users or developers expand it and hack it. What kind of 3rd party hardware can be created for the new Apple TV? So far it looks like none.

I do like the new iPod Touch. Not in the market though, because I have a 3rd gen touch. iPad is tempting me, but I want all the stuff that the parent post pointed out. Won't buy until many of those are met.

So for now, the Popcorn Hour C-200 continues to make our TV viewing convenient. Software is a little clunky or slow in spots, but my grade school kids operate it fine. I won't be buying any Apple products for Christmas. Sorry Steve, you'll have to raze the old house and build the new without my financial help.

People who only experience Flash on Windows just don't have any idea how horribly buggy it is on other platforms.

I second this experience from the perspectives of Linux, Solaris, and OSX. Also the Adobe Acrobat Reader is horrible on those platforms. Especially working behind a corporate firewall. Dang thing wants to call home to Adobe all the time. Gave up on it and just use xpdf or Foxit. Adobe kind of had a monopoly going for flash and pdf. They started adding more junk to the applications and didn't focus on reliability. Looks like the horse has left the barn for good.

I'm having a hard time getting a tear to form in my eye over Adobe's flash problems. However, (and I say this as an OSX fan) if you thought Microsoft abused their monopoly... just give Apple a chance. They'll outdo Microsoft there too.

My encounters with shell script limitations are in writing pre/post installation scripts for kickstart. The busybox ash can only do so much. RedHat kickstarts provide the full python for use (since it's based on that). Mandrake kickstarts had a fairly complete core perl. Each linux distro seems to have a different scripting language that the installation is based on. One thing in common seems to be busybox. So if busybox gained a more powerful scripting shell, that would be good in my book. I'm just after fairly powerful scripting capabilities to assist in more complex fully automated (hands off) kickstarts in the corporate environment for desktops, servers, etc.

Amen. That's why the bulk of Slashdot users appreciate your posts. It is real news. Not the Digg tabloid news of "Video of skateboard dog with two heads". Real journalism presents issues that readers may not wish be informed about, but need to be. If we only read about issues reported with a slant that we agree with or support, how do we ever become balanced and understanding of all sides of an issue. News is NOT entertainment. Thanks for the work you do to inform us about pertinent issues.

Nearly every large corporation over 20 years old is in the same situation. XP, IE6, some old java. Local admin rights. Some CPU sapping virus scanner program firing off at 5:30pm rendering the user PC useless. Frustrated users leave for home instead of continuing work. Activated network ports are not tied to a specific MAC, so any netbook, laptop, etc can be plugged in (and thus snoop).

Security requires a price in time and effort, and there are always compromises in order to get work accomplished.
