Comment Inevitable (Score 3, Interesting) 228

Now that more and more of us are finding ways to cut out the commercials, they have to be hidden in the content.
As others have said, I don't mind if they are done "right" (and there is a fine line of course). My main concern is that this will go the same way cable TV did.

First, they rationalize that they need this because there are fewer and fewer eyeballs hitting the commercials.
Next, they will find a way to enforce the 10 minutes of commercials per 1/2 hour of programming.
???
Finally, PROFIT!

We'll finally achieve life as depicted in the Demolition Man (was that parody or just really good product placement?)

U.S. Identifies Vast Mineral Riches in Afghanistan
"The previously unknown deposits — including huge veins of iron, copper, cobalt, gold and critical industrial metals like lithium — are so big and include so many minerals that are essential to modern industry that Afghanistan could eventually be transformed into one of the most important mining centers in the world, the United States officials believe. My guess is that we knew about these before we went in but just now 'discovered' them.

I still chuckle when someone tells me they just bought a bluray player.

I ask why because
1. powerdvd (and it's equivalents) will upconvert
2. you can buy a upconvert dvd player for $35

My tinfoil hat tells me that they just want us to buy the same shit in a different format.

This reminds me of the outcry the music/movie industry has had in the past. The broke the world up into regions so they could maximize their profits by setting prices 'appropriate' to the region. When the internet developed, we learned that we could purchase the movies/music for cheaper if we purchased from a different region. Why should a movie cost me more because I make more money than someone in a different region?

Well, you can choose to vacation elsewhere. I remember reading a few years ago that the American tourist industry was starting to feel the hurt from the TSA's practices. I don't think this new round of stupidity is going to help. Perhaps the travel/tourist lobby will buy some legislation for the poor citizenry.

If you have to travel there for business? Make sure to ship all your electronics in advance and remember that your employer is paying you to get groped.

  Hope it helps!
