Submission + - Activision is preventing Gabriel Knight from coming to Linux (phoronix.com) 1

crabel writes: A Gabriel Knight remake was announced back in October with plans to release the game for Windows, Apple OS X, iPad, Android, and Linux. Unfortunately, the technical director of the game studio had bad news for Linux users:
"Figured this deserved its own thread. I hate to be the bearer of bad news here, but my previous statement that GK would be available on Linux turns out to be incorrect. I can't even begin to imagine why, but Activision isn't allowing the game to be made for that platform. Just PC, Mac, Android, and iOS devices."

Not so fast. First of all, the lawyers "cheated". They avoided the term "streaming" in their applications to court and made it look like a typical filesharing case. The courts granted most of their applications because of "unbefugtem öffentlichen Zugänglichmachen über eine sogenannte Tauschbörse" that means "unauthorized sharing of files through a file sharing network". German internet law blogger Thomas Stadler explains in his blog, why their applications are invalid (for various reasons). Submission + - Researcher Turns to Kickstarter for Journal Funding (kickstarter.com) 1

An anonymous reader writes: In what may the first example of crowfunding a scientific journal, Dr. Crista Royal is currently trying to raise $150,000 to start "JNegRes"--a journal for publishing "negative" results from experiments. From the Kickstarter page:

Currently it is very difficult to publish negative results in science. Not all results are positive, yet all truth should be shared. Sharing negative results will help refine our collective knowledge and bring our ideas closer to the actuality of how the universe works. Each negative result, as well as each positive result, brings us closer to the truth.

Submission + - Interview with Prof. Potrykus, inventor of Golden Rice (psiram.com)

crabel writes: According to WHO, 127 millions of pre-school children worldwide suffer from vitamine A deficiency, causing some 500,000 cases of irreversible blindness every year. This deficiency is responsible for 600,000 deaths among children under the age of 5. Golden Rice might be a solution to this problem. The only problem? It's GMO.

In an interview inventor Potrykus, now close to 80 years old, answers questions about the current state of approval, which might happen in the next couple of months.

Submission + - Silent Circle follows Lavabit by closing encrypted e-mail service (cnet.com)

Okian Warrior writes: Silent Circle shuttered its encrypted e-mail service on Thursday, in an apparent attempt to avoid government scrutiny that may threaten its customers' privacy. The company announced that it could "see the writing on the wall" and decided it best to shut down its Silent Mail feature. The company said it was inspired by the closure earlier Thursday of Lavabit, another encrypted e-mail service provider that alluded to a possible national security investigation.

Submission + - Less vaccination then, more measles now (wsj.com)

DavidHumus writes: Some of the longer-term effects of the anti-vaccination movement of past decades is now evident in a dramatic increase in measles. From the article: A measles outbreak infected 1,219 people in southwest Wales between November 2012 and early July, compared with 105 cases in all of Wales in 2011.

There continues to be no credible evidence that vaccination causes autism but the a significant minority believes this anyway.

Well, while I don't know a lot about the matter at hand, can't tell if the claims are valid or not, but Mrs. Seneff has a history of bad papers e.g.: http://scienceblogs.com/insolence/2012/11/20/dumpster-diving-in-the-vaers-database-again/ Also, that she was interviewed by Joseph Mercola doesn't really improve her credibility. Mercola has quite some reputation in pseudomedicine/science. (e.g. that HIV doesn't cause AIDS) http://psiram.com/en/index.php/Joseph_Mercola

They state in their blogpost from Saturday: "Assuming you’re in the first batch of development kits to ship out, the next 24 hours are your absolute last chance to update your shipping address." It is reasonable to assume that shipping starts/started this week. Personally I wouldn't have been surprised if shipping had been delayed till April or so. Sure, there timeline said March, but I have seen countless projects that were delayed a few weeks.

Submission + - Shadowrun Returns: Why a gaming legend ditched Microsoft for indie freedom (redbull.co.uk)

An anonymous reader writes: Shadowrun is making something of a comeback, with no fewer than two separate games in development after being crowdfunded by Kickstarter fans. In an interview published this week, long time Shadowrun game developer Mitch Gitelman talks about the long journey it took to get to this point: in fact, for Gitelman and Shadowrun creator Jordan Weisman to get a publisher interested, they needed to go multi-platform, and that was not something Microsoft (which owned the rights to the series) was willing to do. "“Basically, Microsoft is focused on their own platforms [IE Xbox and Windows] and the publishers we spoke to did not want to limit the potential audience for the game," he says. Check out the full interview for how they cut the Gordian Knot.

Submission + - Comparing the C++ Standard and Boost (slashdot.org)

Nerval's Lobster writes: "The one and only Jeff Cogswell is back with an article exploring an issue important to anyone who works with C++. It's been two years since the ISO C++ committee approved the final draft of the newest C++ standard; now that time has passed, he writes, "we can go back and look at some issues that have affected the language (indeed, ever since the first international standard in 1998) and compare its final result and product to a popular C++ library called Boost." A lot of development groups have adopted the use of Boost, and still others are considering whether to embrace it: that makes a discussion (and comparison) of its features worthwhile. "The Standards Committee took some eight years to fight over what should be in the standard, and the compiler vendors had to wait for all that to get ironed out before they could publish an implementation of the Standard Library," he writes. "But meanwhile the actual C++ community was moving forward on its own, building better things such as Boost.""
