Comment Re:It's either full body scanning (Score 1) 559

As someone who is a staunch opt-outer to the backscatter/millimeter wave machines I am here to tell you that the alternative is great! The 'thorough pat-down' is more of a 3-minute full-body massage. Aside from the screener running the back of his/her hand down my crotch it was something I would happily have paid for (could you imagine the signs? "Get through security faster - take the 'massage' option: $5"). I should also note that they screened me such that no one else could come through the machine, causing an even longer wait for those behind me.

tl,dr: The pat-down feels great, screw the scanner and get something in return!

I should also note that they swiped the screener's gloves for explosive residue afterwards - a real increase in security as opposed to the warm fuzzy feeling provided by the scanners.

Yes, pushing harder will get it in gear, but at the expense of shortening your synchros life - much better for the transmission to hold off on ramming it into first until you're slow enough that it slides in easily. Or just leave it in neutral, let the clutch out and use your brakes. When you're ready to go again, just shift into first.

Remember: brakes are almost always cheaper than a clutch or a transmission rebuild.

Preserving Memories of a Loved One? 527

An anonymous reader writes "My wife is dying of metastatic (stage 4) cancer. Statistically she has between one and two years left. I have pre-teen daughters. I'm looking for innovative ideas on how to preserve memories of their mother and my wife so that years down the road we don't forget the things we all tend to forget about a person as time passes. I have copious photos and am taking as much HD video as I can without being a jerk, so images and sounds are taken care of (and backed up securely). I'm keeping a private blog of simple daily events that help me remember the things in between the hospitalizations and treatments. In this digital age what other avenues are there for preserving memories? Non-digital suggestions would be welcome, too."

Indian Government Threatens RIM, Skype With Ban 281

gauharjk writes "India's Department of Telecommunications has been asked by the government to serve a notice to Skype and Research In Motion to ensure that their email and other data services comply with formats that can be read by security and intelligence agencies, or face a ban in India if they do not comply within 15 days. A similar notice is also being sent to Google, asking it to provide access to content on Gmail in a readable format."
