Submission + - Are We Ready for a True Data Disaster? (infoworld.com)

snydeq writes: "Fatal Exception's Neil McAllister questions how long we can go before a truly catastrophic data disaster strikes. 'The lure of potential profits in the information economy, combined with the apparent ease with which data can be gathered and a lack of regulation, creates a climate of recklessness in which a "data spill" of the scale of the Deepwater Horizon incident seems not just likely, but inevitable.' Witness Google mistakenly emailing potentially sensitive business data to customers of its Local Business Center service, or the 1.5 million Facebook accounts and passwords recently offered up on an underground hacking forum. 'These incidents seem relatively minor, but as companies gather ever more individually identifiable data and cross-reference these databases in new and more innovative ways, the potential for a major catastrophe grows.' Worse, the recent casual indifference of Eric Schmidt and Mark Zuckerberg regarding the personal privacy is reminiscent of the robber barons of old. 'Last week, a characteristically glib Eric Schmidt told attendees of Google's annual Zeitgeist Forum in Europe that "what really matters is actual harm," not the potential for harm. 'The question is, who gets to define what is harmful and what is legitimate business practice? So far, government has declined to take on that role.'"

Of course, but I really hate it when I see something that I really don't feel is that closely related to what the hell is going on in these games. Is no one ever interested in their friend's game, for instance? Everyone is always so damned selfish! I mean seriously? Are gamers anti-social? Then again, it *was* a single player "RPG"... :\

I really don't believe this at all, despite what you all say, as I read in comments from the actual article...it just seems fishy and speculation also seems to confirm that this report might just be a red herring. I had speculated myself that it was probably gonna be around $120, but pleasantly surprised to hear a figure of around $80. Another thing it seems pretty funny to me that no one comprehends when they read "bundled with the Xbox 360 Arcade console for $299." My philosophy is, unless I know first-hand of something's failing points I keep mum, but there is certainly no mistaking a critic's ignorance...Final point, all the preparation and professional research in the world is nothing compared unleashing something into the hands of a few thousand evolved chimps! Time for this damned, dirty ape's lunch...

It didn't come with the system originally and many aren't going to be willing to pay $100 or $150 to add it...You shouldn't be able to buy one without Natal/Move. Then at least all new buyers would have it. As it is, they might as well give up now.

As if to say, "no one is going to buy another hard drive with more space" When it originally came out, without/only a 20GB drive, did it really stop anybody from getting a 60GB, 120GB or even 250GB now? I don't understand your sales/marketing logic...

Submission + - Microsoft man: my job is to destroy IE6 (pcpro.co.uk) 2

Barence writes: The man in charge of Internet Explorer has told PC Pro that he's been tasked with destroying IE6. Internet Explorer 6 continues to be the most used browser version in the world at the ripe old age of nine. IE6's position as the default browser in Windows XP means many companies still cling to the browser. "Part of my job is to get IE6 share down to zero as soon as possible," said Ryan Gavin, head of the Internet Explorer business group. Microsoft has also been giving further previews of Internet Explorer 9, with demonstrations showing two 720p HD videos running simultaneously on a netbook, thanks to IE9's GPU-accelerated graphics.

Submission + - Blizzard Boss Says DRM Is A Waste Of Time (thinq.co.uk) 2

Stoobalou writes: Blizzard founder, Frank Pearce reckons that fighting piracy with DRM is a losing battle.

His company — which is responsible for the biggest videogame of all time, the worryingly-addictive online fantasy role player World of Warcraft — is to release Starcraft 2 on July 27th and Pearce has told Videogamer that the title won't be hobbled with the kind of crazy copy protection schemes which have made Ubisoft very unpopular in gaming circles of late.

Starcraft 2 will require a single online activation using the company's Battle.net servers, after which players will be allowed to play the single-player game to their hearts' content, without being forced to have a persistent Internet connection.

Project Natal Pricing and Release Date Revealed 156

tekgoblin writes "According to Edge-online.com, their source says that we can expect Microsoft's Project Natal to cost around $149. 'The figure for the standalone unit is significantly higher than a previous sub-£50 estimate, but less than pricing recently suggested by European retailers. It’s also more expensive than Sony’s Natal rival, Move, which will be available later this year with a game for less than $100.'"
