Submission + - Looming Power Struggle Over U.S. Hydroelectric System (nytimes.com) 1

cdreimer writes: According to a report in The New York Times (possibly paywalled, alternative story), the Trump Administration has proposed selling off 250 hydropower dams on the Columbia River in the Northwest that provides power for half of the U.S. hydroelectric system:

"To ride down the Columbia River as the John Day Dam’s wall of concrete slowly fills the view from a tugboat is to see what the country’s largest network of energy-producing dams created through five decades of 20th-century ambition, investment and hubris. Nearly half of the nation’s hydropower electricity comes from more than 250 hydropower dams that were built on the Columbia and its tributaries — a vast and complex arc of industry and technology that touches tens of millions of lives across the West every day. Google taps the river’s energy to power a data center 90 minutes east of Portland, Ore. — drawn there by some of the cheapest, most environmentally friendly electricity in the nation. Farmers farther upriver in Washington State pump irrigation water into alfalfa fields — with both the water and the electricity supplied by a dam. The Space Needle in Seattle uses Columbia River electricity to slowly spin tourists in its sky-view restaurant. High-voltage transmission lines shoot south to California. Now, the Trump administration has proposed rethinking the entire system, with a plan to sell the transmission network of wires and substations owned by the Bonneville Power Administration, a federal agency that distributes most of the Columbia basin’s output, to private buyers."

The nearby city of Webster, TX has promised to match Kickstarter funding up to $400,000.00. The goal is to raise $250,000.00 to add to the $3.5 million already budgeted to restore Mission Control.

Submission + - Critical Information for Aviators Bogged Down In 'Ridiculous' 1920s NOTAM System 2

Freshly Exhumed writes: Mark Zee of OpsGroup, an entity that provides airlines and aircraft operators worldwide with critical flight information, has had enough of the NOTAM system of critical information notices to aviators, decrying that it has become 'absolutely ridiculous. We communicate the most critical flight information, using a system invented in 1920, with a format unchanged since 1924, burying essential information that will lose a pilot their job, an airline their aircraft, and passengers their lives, in a mountain of unreadable, irrelevant bullshit.'

Submission + - Underage Gambling, the seedy underside of eSports (espn.com)

yzf750 writes: Two prominent players running a gambling website catering to minors. Showing how they win big bucks on a coin flip while not revealing that they run the site. What is Valve doing or not doing.

Comment Same thing happened in Houston (Score 4, Interesting) 113

Comcast, the Astro's and the Rocket's started Comcast Sportsnet Houston about 3 years ago. Lots of local sports content, HD shows and of course all the games live. ATT, DirecTV and Dish all refused to carry the channel. The content gradually shrank to infomercials except when a game was on, then finally the channel went into bankruptcy. ATT then bought the remains and the same day launched Root Sports. Dish and DirecTV both picked the channel up. Interesting how it happened in LA too...

Submission + - Secton 230 of the CDA under threat. (mercurynews.com)

whoever57 writes: The CEO of Backpage was recently arrested for "pimping". It is likely that the charges will not stick because of section 230 of the Communications Decency Act (CDA), under which publishers are protected from liability for the postings of their users. However, this could just be the first shot in the battle to weaken section 230. . This could endanger other sites, such as Craigslist, and ultimately, any site with user-written content.

Submission + - TSA confiscates 3D printed "gun" (guns.com)

yzf750 writes: A traveler at Reno-Tahoe airport had a 3d printed "gun" confiscated. Looking at the pictures, it does not even look like it could fire a round, and if it did, it would probably blow up in the hand of the person firing it. This will probably touch off hyperbolic debates on how to make 3d printing of guns illegal, even this is most likely just a replica and not an actual gun. Kudos to TSA for actually stopping something for a change though.

3) point at (it works like a mouse) the "input" app and click

Use the other remote that came with the TV, not the mouse remote. I have 10 LG TV's from that era at work, they all came with a standard remote with number buttons, vol + -, channel + -, input, etc and the stupid mouse remote that we never use.
