MIT has a great PR machine. Dont get me wrong, they do the most amazing things. But they make sure everyone knows what they are working on all the time. This is in its infancy, but this PR will likely help get more funding and interest to help make it into a niche tool, and far down the line a commercial product.

Submission + - Scientists achieve perfect efficiency for water-splitting half-reaction (phys.org)

Dthief writes: Splitting water is a two-step process, and in a new study, researchers have performed one of these steps (reduction) with 100% efficiency. The results shatter the previous record of 60% for hydrogen production with visible light, and emphasize that future research should focus on the other step (oxidation) in order to realize practical overall water splitting. The main application of splitting water into its components of oxygen and hydrogen is that the hydrogen can then be used to deliver energy to fuel cells for powering vehicles and electronic devices.

Submission + - New facebook clone paying users for content (recode.net)

An anonymous reader writes: New York-based Tsu, which looks a lot like Facebook at first glance, only takes 10 percent of the ad revenue it generates, passing the other 90 percent back to users, according to founder Sebastian Sobczak. All the ad revenue Tsu makes in one day, for example, is distributed to users based on how many organic post-views they get during that 24-hour period. The more views and engagement you generate as a user, the larger portion of the pie you get.

that being said if you want to support this new system: https://www.tsu.co/dthief :)

how about make the algorithm.......use it in a predictive manner after making it....THEN REPORT IT.....

what they have done here is taken a data set and made algorithms until one of them matched well. If I have a model that predicts traffic patterns or weather patterns in the past, its only useful if it is then applied after the fact and is still comparably accurate to when it was developed.

Submission + - MIT researchers can listen to your conversation by watching your potato chip bag (washingtonpost.com)

Dthief writes: The results are certainly impressive (and a little scary). In one example shown in a compilation video, a bag of chips is filmed from 15 feet away, through sound-proof glass. The reconstructed audio of someone reciting “Mary Had a Little Lamb” in the same room as the chips isn’t crystal clear. But the words being said are possible to decipher.

In most cases, a high-speed camera is necessary to accomplish the feat. Still, at 2,000 to 6,000 frames per second, the camera used by the researchers is nothing compared to the best available on the market, which can surpass 100,000 frames per second. And the researchers found that even cheaper cameras could be used.

i think they saved it BECAUSE the plane was lost, and probably they keep things for like 24 hrs in case there is some issue with the flight.

since its a method they dont normally use maybe they didnt think to use it until 2 weeks past? and also I saw some mention of them passing the info on March 12th, but maybe that was less exact.
