Whatever the outcome with the Japanese nuclear plants, this paints a grim future for the nuclear power industry. I hope they do something responsible with waste/unspent fuel from soon-to-be decommissioned plants (ie, render it unusable/unobtainable by terrorists). But unfortunately there's too much monetary temptation for foreign governments to keep their radioactive stockpiles out of the hands of well qualified buyers. And storage issues - I wouldn't put it past someone to consider dumping spent fuel into the ocean. Nuclear safety -- oxymoron? Safe considering the process that is happening, and the rare instances of failure. But as a whole, not a flawless system. It is the industrialized version of safety, not fool-proof / fail-safe. Thick concrete walls apparently aren't enough. If the design allows for the possibility of release of radioactive material then it is a risky compromise as far as the public is concerned.

Back in 2003 when LCD monitors were still priced fixed (I think I was paying $250/ea?) and Newegg was still shipping primarily with Fedex, I had 6 units delivered directly to my house. They were destined for the office. Each one received a LOUD 8' drop from the truck onto my driveway (as witnessed through a raised miniblind.) A minute later I opened the door to sign. An awkward moment... I think my glare said enough. I never reported the guy. Everything works to this day (less two or three power supplies). No shipping claim was required much to my surprise. Two of the monitors have slight artifacts but were functional enough that Newegg would have argued any return. The foam packing apparently does make a difference. As far as exceeding weight capacity on a single walled box? Any UPS battery ordered through Newegg up until about a year ago was being shipped in its bare carton. I would seldom get one in tact, but usually all the pieces would be in there. A lot of the ones on store shelves don't look much better.

His home owner's insurance - I'm completely bewildered if they don't require some kind of fire coverage in his policy. They shouldn't even cover his loss. In a situation like that, I don't see why they don't require proof of fire coverage or drop his policy (which would default his loan). Fire dept - should be required to respond to the fire regardless of whether he has paid his dues or not, and then collect for the cost of services rendered afterward. If you call an ambulance, they don't check if you have health insurance before dispatching. Sounds like very sketchy legal ground because they are selling their services as a form of insurance.

I only ding cars when they park on the friggin yellow line, leaving virtually no space for the person pulling in next to them.

Then I make sure they get a nice big ding in the side of their car.

Assholes.

So wait, you pick a parking spot where someone else is parked on the yellow line, and then intentionally door ding them? So in the process, this causes you to park your car closer to the next yellow line, thus making you an "asshole" like the other guy? If you see a car parked on a yellow line, it's just as likely that the previous person didn't leave enough room. Better just door ding them both to be safe.

What if my car is jewel colored? Regardless, it's my property. If you ding it, maybe you should have to pay to fix it. How is a door ding different from a fender bender? In value only, and it's not a moving violation. Just like if you were to key my car or otherwise vandalize it. An intentional door ding is vandalism, is it not? A crime. Paint may not matter much to you, but it does to the majority of people who might be looking to purchase a used car.
