most of the people who would boycott are probably no script/adblock anyway, so there's no lost impressions there.

They give you the option to turn off ads when you've posted enough upmodded comments anyway.... the theory, I'm assuming, is that if you're actually contributing you're helping to drive people to the site, so they actually make money off your posts.

If *those* people stop posting/contributing, then they will notice it. At least, they will, if there's any logic at all to having the option to turn off ads....

Very, but sometimes you can't let the UID fool you. This is actually my 4th account... I forgot the password for my first one a *long* time ago after the first time I quit using Slashdot (which I think was over a site redesign, actually, and wouldn't use it any more anyway because it was my real name at the time), and stopped using the other two because I didn't like the usernames -- one started getting used, in another context, by a kink porn company in Seattle, and the other is too similar to another user on the site. Yes, this one's a high UID, but I've been coming here off and on for 14 years now.

I think we both know that sometimes you see very insightful comments from nooblets, and sometimes very inciteful comments from old-timers.... the UID isn't *really* a very good indication of the quality of the content. :)

Well for starters any time the company buys us lunch, it's two pizzas or two whole chickens per Fatass, and one slice or one bony wing for each of the rest of us.

I've known some pretty fat people in my life (people > 600lbs), but never known somebody who could finish off two x-large pizzas in a single sitting, let alone 2 whole chickens. Either way, it's a pretty dick move of your company to allow somebody to walk away with 2 whole pizzas before everybody else has had a chance to get some.

Depends on the job. In my case, in an office, they get to have a $800 office chair while the rest of us have to deal with the $70 crappy models... because the normal max weight on a regular office chair is 250 pounds and you have to buy a really NICE one to support a 450 pound individual.

Get a doctor's note. I'm not even close to the 250lb limit you cite (which, btw, is *way* less than most office chairs are designed to handle), and I have the nice $1000 office chair, because of a bad back. If your chair is making you uncomfortable or causing medical/ergonomic problems, then get the appropriate documentation and fix it, don't come here to bitch about it.

Not my spot, because I can't park in the handicapped/disabled parking section. But it DOES take one of those spots away from the guy who has to use a walker due to advancing MS, the lady in the next cube over with a severe chronic Asthma condition, and the guy down the hall who busted both his legs when a drunk hit his car, and has a temporary permit while's he's in physical therapy.

So, being morbidly obese (which may have a medical cause that you don't know about) has magically given a person the ability to drive 3 cars at once? Or do you live in an area that lets people drive 18 foot wide cars on the street? Being grossly overweight causes all kinds of medical issues, and for most people who are that large, there's usually a medical problem that is causing the issue, or at least making it difficult to correct the issue without getting a procedure like a gastric bypass. And even that is not a guaranteed thing, as a lot of hospitals won't perform surgeries on bariatric patients because of liability issues.

The thing which bothers me most about fat people is when they try to act like they're some kind of victim. You're not a victim, you're just too lazy/unmotivated to DO anything about it. I have little sympathy for people with problems which are entirely of their own making, and yes that includes Fatass Mutherfuckers alongside drug users, alcoholics, and other assorted low-life scum.

If you've never been obese, you have no fucking clue what you're talking about. If you have been obese, then you're either supremely lucky in how easy it was to lose weight, an asshole. Losing weight is almost never a question of pure willpower. Here's a hint to get you started: the food guide that the educators have been stuffing down the throats of Americans for 40 years? Complete bullshit. Fad diet courtesy of the grain lobby, and a recipe for heart failure, obesity, and depression.

Unfortunately, it's not that simple.... some of our banks are publicly traded on the American stock exchanges, for example. If our banks want to continue doing business in the US, then they have to adhere to American laws.

We also have a two-faced weasel for a prime minister, a man whose idea of "fiscal transparency" was putting a see-through window in the new money when they redesigned it a couple of years ago. And unfortunately, due to voter apathy, the fucker actually got a majority government too (seriously, only 25% of eligible voters actually voted for him). Because of these factors, it's unlikely our government will show any teeth at all over this one.

That might be the way they sell it on that side of the pond, but the fact of the matter is that US citizens living abroad are still required to file, and (generally, if they live in a low-tax country) pay, US taxes. If I in Switzerland earn an income based entirely within the borders of Switzerland, the US still wants a cut, and the law is designed to catch such foreign residents in addition to US residents.

And if you're in Switzerland, earning an income in Switzerland, maintaining residence in Switzerland, and paying taxes in Switzerland, on what grounds do the Americans have *any* right to lay claim to your income? Taxes are meant to pay for a government infrastructure and services, and if you're living in Switzerland, you're not actually using any of those services -- at least, none of the ones that aren't paid for with user fees. They have user fees for passport/diplomatic services, which are the only actual government services I could see such a person taking advantage of....

This isn't about expats living/earning wages overseas, it's about Americans using overseas bank accounts to hide income that they earned in the US, in order to avoid paying taxes on that.

It's causing a lot of upset here in Canada, too, because of our privacy laws, and because the Americans are refusing to give us a reciprocal agreement for Canadians in the US. (on the grounds that they don't enforce foreign laws).

They've done 99% of the work, but for some reason are blind to that crucial last 1%. Given that this is probably never going to change, the Linux desktop is pretty much an exercise in futility and inefficiency.

You may want to take a peek at elementaryOS. A few of my friends, on seeing what I've done with my laptop, have described their "Pantheon" desktop as "Gnome that doesn't suck". Pantheon was originally forked from Gnome, though it's taken a life of its own... as of now, it's only officially supported on elementary, where it's the default DE.

Funny that. I have an AMD graphics card in my gaming Linux system, with Steam, and it works pretty well. AMD's driver support has sucked (and I built the system before I switched the gaming system over to Linux), but with the current experimental drivers it's actually pretty good. I have not noticed any problems with any of my games.

AMD is working with Valve to produce driver improvements, so I would expect that things to continue improving.

This man, at the request of the couple he was donating the material to, signed away any rights/claims to being a father. This is completely and utterly wrongheaded on behalf of the state, and I hope the man is able to take it to appeals.
