Comment Re:OpenSCAD ? (Score 1) 218

Yes I've gone through a few different programs, and had almost settled on blender when I discovered openscad. The great thing about openscad is you can build upon things and include things more then once. It also doesn't have the problem of scale or holes in your model (a very big problem with blender).

It has ended up saving me a lot of work.

Submission + - Tesla Motors Loses Appeal Against BBC Top Gear (bailii.org)

TrueSatan writes: In a highly detailed decision the UK Court of Appeal has rejected Tesla's appeal against an eartlier ruling by a lower court that, too, rejected Tesla's case. Reading through the decision it is clear that the judge saw Tesla's case as lacking sufficient detail and specific instances of proof to support each claim. The judge stated that that Tesla's chances of a successful appeal, should the case have gone to trial, were insufficiently high to justify holding a trial. He stated that Tesla's case had no real chance of success and in many notes picked appart Tesla's legal team's arguments...that said he did not say that Top Gear were right or justified in portraying Tesla's vehicle in the way they did merely that there wasn't a legal case for an appeal.
One of the key flaws in Tesla's case, according to the judicial decision, was Tesla's inability to show that actual pecuniary harm, with detailed financial figues, had occured.

Submission + - dragon naturally speaking virus (stockchase.com) 2

iplayfast writes: "I'm livid. My site updates information on a daily basis. Over the last few months Firefox has been asking for a plugin, I never put that in the code....

Turns out that Dragon naturally speaking version 12, is adding extra code to entries if you are using firefox. This code is hidden inside of div tags. So users don't know they are inserting it. It is asking visitors to my site (who are also using firefox) to install a plugin. This plugin doesn't exist.

In otherwords, if you go to the site and use firefox you will be asked to install a plugin. If you do it, none will be found.

EVERY SINGLE TIME YOU GO TO THE PAGE!

Just a big waste of time and resources.

As anybody can enter things into the site (similar to slashdot) anybody using dragon dictate 12 will be filling my site with this pointless code.

I view this as a virus. It infects computers in a hidden way, is made by a fairly large company, on purpose, with I assume, the idea of releasing their plugin to promote their software.

Am I overreacting?"

Iran Says It Sent Monkey Into Space and Back 425

Iranian state TV is claiming that the country has successfully sent a monkey into space and back, bringing Iran one step closer to its goal of a manned space flight. From the article: "Iran has long said it seeks to send an astronaut into space as part of its ambitious aerospace program, including plans for a new space center announced last year. In 2010, Iran said it launched an Explorer rocket into space carrying a mouse, a turtle and worms."

Submission + - Meet "Ophelia," Dell's Plan To Reinvent Itself (ibtimes.com)

redletterdave writes: "Dell is reportedly working on a project codenamed "Ophelia," a USB-sized self-contained computer that provides access to virtually every major operating system there is — from the Mac OS, to Windows, to Google's Chrome OS, to cloud-based solutions from Citrix and Dell — all via the cloud. Powered by Android, Ophelia works just like a USB port: Just plug it into any flat panel monitor or TV, and boom, you have a computer. Ophelia connects to the Internet via Wi-Fi, and can connect to keyboards and other peripherals over Bluetooth. Not only is the computer portable and power-efficient, but to make it truly accessible, Dell plans to sell the device for just $50."

Submission + - The Android SDK is longer free software. (fsfe.org) 1

tian2992 writes: "The new terms for the Android SDK now include phrases such as "you may not: (a) copy (except for backup purposes), modify, adapt, redistribute, decompile, reverse engineer, disassemble, or create derivative works of the SDK or any part of the SDK" among other non-Free software friendly terms, as noted by FSF Europe's Torsten Grote. Replicant, a free fork of Android announced the release of Replicant SDK 4.0 based on the latest sources of Android SDK without the new terms."

That windows 8 sucks big time. (I use it everyday so I know). And kde is easy to use. (I use it everyday too!)

Your ATI is funky between distros isn't because there isn't an ABI (there is, it's opensource you can't get more ABI then that!) It's because ATI has problems. I don't switch between distros much so I can't really comment on why ATI is having problems, but all I can say that with Sabayon or Gentoo they've worked flawlessly.
As for IE support, I don't give a flying fuck.
Point is there is no reason to change to Win8. If you are using Windows 7 and like it stick with it. Win 8 wasn't built for the desktop.

Also this discussion was about using Linux for Non-Technical users. I still support that kde is easier to use then Windows of any strip but probably not enough to change if you have already learned MS's system. If you haven't used any system kde is the way to go.

Submission + - Leap Motion Minority Report Interface Prepped For 2013 (singularityhub.com)

kkleiner writes: "Mid-2012, Leap Motion unveiled the most accurate motion sensing technology on the market to date. The Leap detects every subtle finger flick and hand gesture with up to 1/100th of a millimeter precision. All that for just $70. A round of Minority Report and Prometheus references ensued—and then a round of skepticism. Now it appears the company is geared up for a major launch in 2013 with a large fleet of 3rd party app developers on its side."

Submission + - "Spaceport America Could Become a Ghost Town"

RocketAcademy writes: "A group of New Mexico legislators is warning that the $200-million Spaceport America "could become a ghost town, with tumbleweeds crossing the runways” if trial lawyers succeed in blocking critical liability legislation. The warning came in a letter to the Albuquerque Journal [subscription or free trial required].

Virgin Galactic has signed a lease to become the spaceport's anchor tenant but may pull out if New Mexico is unable to provide liability protection for manufacturers and part suppliers, similar to legislation already passed by Texas, Colorado, Florida, and Virginia. The proposed legislation is also similar to liability protection which New Mexico offers to the ski industry.

An eclectic group of business and civic interests has formed the Save Our Spaceport Coalition to support passage of the liability reform legislation, which is being fought by the New Mexico Trial Lawyers Association."

I like how the US sticks to imperial, then changes the size of the gallon to smaller so you think you aren't paying as much. At least in Canada we know we are paying through the nose. We export to the US so does that mean that Canadian citizens are supporting the US economy? We are actually paying for you to drive?

I sometimes just don't get it.
