I've spoken about something extremely similar with the psychologist I have been seeing. From what I remember what the psychologist said was "Apart from scaring the living shit out of you, I can't see the purpose of him doing that to you" and he said that I have never experienced any love in my life. Personally it has manifested in my life by the fact that neither me or my brother have never had a girlfriend and we are now in our late twenties, that I have tried to kill myself with bad results to my body (some loss of sexual function for one, although the psychologist thinks it is psychological), and that me and my brother are fairly socially outcast. Though perhaps there was a lot of plain bad luck, I believe we wouldn't be as broken as we are if our environment had been better. I've had a psychiatrist that I was seeing say "You could shoot the bastard, but it won't do you any good.", this was just after a couple of questions, I hadn't even told him about my life, just that I have had thoughts of revenge.
