Hand Written Clock Screenshot-sm 86

a3buster writes "This clock does not actually have a man inside, but a flatscreen that plays a 24-hour loop of this video by the artist watching his own clock somewhere and painstakingly erasing and re-writing each minute. This video was taken at Design Miami during Art Basel Miami Beach 2009."

I believe you are being mislead by the word 'friend'.
It is supposed to be a person whose company one enjoys and who is there in good times and bad to give advice and encouragement as a confidant(e) and a sounding board. Not the 400-odd people who you may have met once in a long-forgotten party and have collected like baseball cards.

It's not so much a matter of political correctness as scientific accuracy. Many autistic people are better at processing and interpreting information at a vastly superior speed and accuracy than the average (hence, this article). Define 'retarded'. If we're trying to evolve into, say, Vulcans, they may well be ahead of the curve.

Although I agree political correctness can often be over-the-top, I do think it should be unacceptable to vilify someone who has their abilities differently distributed due to random factors entirely beyond their control, and is, by some definitions, more intelligent.

Canadian Blood Services Promotes Pseudoscience 219

trianglecat writes "The not-for-profit agency Canadian Blood Services has a section of their website based on the Japanese cultural belief of ketsueki-gata, which claims that a person's blood group determines or predicts their personality type. Disappointing for a self-proclaimed 'science-based' organization. The Ottawa Skeptics, based in the nation's capital, appear to be taking some action."

Comment Re:Buddhists... (Score 1) 820

Buddhists, especially the laity, are permitted to eat non-vegetarian food with the exception of certain sources of meat. It is the killing of an animal for the sole purpose of eating it that is prohibited. Monks are allowed to accept meat given to them (Buddhists monks are required to live almost completely on charity), unless they suspect the meat was slaughtered specifically for their benefit. Buddhist vegetarianism is more a cultural and personal initiative than a religious dictum. Karma and reincarnation have nothing to do with it. The Buddha himself died after consuming contaminated pork.

Comment Re:Simple... (Score 1) 820

I don't think the animals' suffering is what is keeping religious people from eating beef or pork - it's the species. If it comes ultimately from a cow, most Hindus will still consider it forbidden. If it comes from a pig, it's still haram to Muslims and treif to Jews.
