The difference is that Amazon is an e-commerce marketplace open to everyone. Imagine if you paid Target $40,000 per month to carry your product in stores, and they put up a laminated cardstock image on the back of a shelf with a notice to "ask an employee to retrieve one for you from the warehouse" while all of the Target branded products are right there for you to grab and put in your cart.

This is no different than Google recommending their own solutions over paid advertisers in Google searches. It's not wrong as long as they make it clear that "searches may include our own branded products in a higher position than our competitors - do your due diligence to make sure you're selecting the correct item to fit your needs".

Any clue how much Apple earns thru licensed "Works with iPhone / Works with iPad" text on charging/data devices? They're not going to go want to give that up. The smart plan on Apple's part is to build a USB-C to Lightning dongle adapter (as flimsy as possible) and include it with every iPhone, iPad, etc. and then sell a small, better quality one (that is very easy to lose) for $19.99. The EU resolution says it has to be a common charger connector, it doesn't say all data, audio, video, etc. has to work, so Apple can stick with Lightning (until their partners convince them that its time for people to buy all new accessories again) while still allowing USB-C charging.

Or they could make enormous Swiss cheese... the possibilities are endless.

You eventually learn to review all the info about the apps before installing them. Most "free" apps are only free because they come with ads and it clearly says "Contains Ads." Most apps you pay for, don't include ads.

You can eliminate most ads by installing DNS66, a free (as in beer) VPN that filters out most ad requests and doesn't require root privileges. It also blocks ads from your web browser apps - you can disable ad-blocking for specific apps if you need/want to see those ads.
