Submission + - Games and Storytelling White Paper

Corvus Elrod writes: "PJ's Attic has published a white paper titled Games and Storytelling. The white paper describes a storytelling model which our studio developed as a foundation for our game design. While the model was designed to be inclusive of video games and new media, it also can be used to describe traditional storytelling media such as folkloric oral traditions, music, literature and film. The model's development was influenced by the writing of Umberto Eco and Marshal McLuhan, improvisational theater techniques, game design principles and over twenty years experience in designing participatory storytelling experiences. The paper is available as a free download at PJ's Attic. Direct Download: Link PJ's Attic Publications Page: Link"

Submission + - A Better Open Source Webmail?

CandyMan writes: "Recently I have been forced to go back to a certain open source webmail (name withheld to protect the touchy), and I can't say I would recommend it to anyone. For emergencies maybe, but not for daily use. Lightning-quick full-text indexing and Javascript UI tricks in Gmail and Yahoo! mail have spoilt me forever, and I guess that most webmail users out there would feel the same. Old-style html-only webmail applications just don't cut it anymore. Which is your favourite webmail client? Is it a bare-bones html-only application, or does it have a fancier interface?"

Submission + - dell installs ubuntu, sells windows

An anonymous reader writes: the fact: dell said they will install ubuntu on their desktops, to give a coiche to the costumers.
real fact: dell still sells you windows, but they just delete it and install ubuntu, or just delete everything. thats right, you still give money to microsoft: dell is basically saying "since we don't know if you will install a pirated copy of windows, we still sell you windows (xp), but we don't give you the licence, since you don't want it" ... O_o

just try asking them what price difference is there between a notebook with windows and the very same notebook without anything.

Submission + - OpenWii 2.2 now supports DVD

crkian writes: "The people responsible for the open-source Wii mod OpenWii have announced the release of OpenWii v2.2, which includes a DVD upgrade. Those who love the Wii and find the DVD format handy for their archival purposes are probably rejoicing right now. Anyhow, before you go on a DVD spree, they do note that you must still use the setup disk to set the region. Triforce, a member of the OpenWii forums notes that he's tested the new release on a D2A/DMS USA Wii. Here are the results: Wii Originals: Yes Wii Backups: Yes Wii Imports: Not Tested Wii Imports Backups: Not Tested Gamecube Originals: Yes Gamecube Backups 8cm: Not Tested Gamecube Imports: Yes Gamecube Backup Imports 8cm: Not Tested Gamecube Imports Backup 12cm: No http://wampago.com/2007/05/20/openwii-22-now-suppo rts-dvd/"

Submission + - Girl Puts Computer Parts In Stuffed Beaver

ErikInterlude writes: "First off, here's the link.

It's a slideshow demonstrating how an enterprising young lady acquired a stuffed beaver, hollowed it out, and placed all necessary parts inside to make it a computer. It's even got a DVD drive coming out of its belly!

I had no idea beavers were big enough to store all that hardware..."
Microsoft

Submission + - Microsoft: Popfly is not a Yahoo or Google ripoff

thefickler writes: Microsoft's new Popfly service, which the company describes as an easy way to build and share mashups, gadgets, Web pages, and applications, is now officially in alpha release. While comparisons have been made between Popfly and some of the other Web 2.0 gadget/mashup services from companies such as Yahoo and Google, Microsoft has made it clear that Popfly is what the company has been all about since the day it launched BASIC for the Altair 8080.

Submission + - Registrar Cybersquatting on Searched Domains

neutronblast writes: I work at web development firm and recently we were searching for new domain names for a client by going to a registrar and seeing if any of them were availible. After finding the name that we wanted, we emailed the client to get approval to purchase the name. The next day when we went to register it we found that it had been registered by an "Internet Domain Holding Company" (a.k.a. cybersquatter) called Maltuzi, LLC.

Coincedence? I'm not sure. I did some research and came up with and article at this Wired Blog and on the forums at webmasterworld.

Has anyone else had this experience? If so, let this be a caution to you and to just pony up the 10 bucks if you think you might want the name.
IBM

Submission + - Big Blue Cheaper than Red Hat

narramissic writes: "A report from research house Illuminata (based on data supplied by IBM) shows that running 10-50 applications on a mainframe costs 30-60% less than running the same workload on a one server/one application basis where the servers run Linux or Solaris. Here are some of the reasons Illuminata cites for the cost difference:
  • a mainframe typically requires less electricity and air conditioning than many 1U servers running the same workload, because the mainframe has better cooling technology.
  • when running multiple applications the mainframe's people costs are much less than those needed to run the same workload on distributed systems. The report notes that, as a percentage of TCO, people costs have sky-rocketed over the past decade (from 14 to 43 percent), while hardware costs have shrunk (from 65 to 20 percent).
  • mainframe software costs are competitive with other platforms where workload levels are in the 10 to 50 applications area.
  • mainframe memory prices have fallen significantly in recent years.
