Submission + - Can I buy the Classic interface? 3

Max Hyre writes: LWN almost went under a number of years ago because its volunteer editors couldn't afford to keep it up. The readers rose up and insisted that they be allowed to pay for it.

Can we do the same for Classic?

I'm a nerd. I read. I'm the one in the museum ignoring the display and reading the description. I want text, easily accessible, clearly laid out, and plenty of it. I'll pay to keep the UI I know and love.

The Beta has none of those characteristics. The Beta site is repellent, unusable, and unneeded. I won't use it, and if ``Classic'' goes away, I won't visit /., and it'll be a pity.

How much do you actually receive in revenue for each user? I suspect I'll match it to keep the status quo. Ask us what it's worth to us. I'd certainly pay $1/month, and would think about $5/month. I bet that I'm not alone.

What was loved about Slashdot does not appear in the new design — those creating the latter, please fire yourself and go work for a commercial consumer site (which we never read, and never will). OUR site should work without JavaScript, and JavaScript that IS used should to do something actually desired by a reader or commenter, not waste our bandwidth and CPU, and electricity, sending CRAP onto our computers. Improvements/ plugins, http://userstyles.org/styles/9..., won't be enough.

Submission + - Nadella named new Microsoft CEO; Gates out as chairman (nbcnews.com)

Pigskin-Referee writes: Microsoft named its top cloud computing executive, Satya Nadella, as chief executive on Tuesday.

The company also said Bill Gates would step aside as chairman of the board but would remain a technology advisor to the company. John Thompson, who has been the lead independent director, will become chairman.

Nadella's appointment ends a longer-than-expected search for a new leader after Steve Ballmer announced his intention to retire in August.

Nadella is only the third CEO in Microsoft's 39-year history, following co-founder Bill Gates and Ballmer.

The company took to Twitter to introduce its choice as CEO to the world.

Submission + - Satya Nadella Named Microsoft CEO (slashdot.org)

Nerval's Lobster writes: As widely expected after last week’s rumors, Satya Nadella has been named the new CEO of Microsoft. Nadella is Microsoft’s third CEO, after co-founder Bill Gates and Steve Ballmer. He’s been with the company for more than twenty years, eventually becoming executive vice president of its Cloud and Enterprise division; Nadella and his team were responsible for the creation of “Cloud OS,” the platform that powers Microsoft’s large-scale cloud services such as SkyDrive, Azure, and Office 365. Under his guidance, Microsoft’s revenue from cloud services has grown by several billion over the past few years. In his email to employees, Nadella said that he was “humbled” by his appointment, and that he had asked Bill Gates to act as a close advisor in the months and years ahead. “I’ve been fortunate to work closely with both Bill and Steve in my different roles at Microsoft, and as I step in as CEO, I’ve asked Bill to devote additional time to the company, focused on technology and products,” he wrote. “I’m also looking forward to working with John Thompson as our new Chairman of the Board.” He devoted the rest of the email to explaining his philosophy of technology, and how that will ultimately influence his leadership. “The opportunity ahead will require us to reimagine a lot of what we have done in the past for a mobile and cloud-first world, and do new things,” he added. “We are the only ones who can harness the power of software and deliver it through devices and services that truly empower every individual and every organization.” A lot of tech companies would disagree the assertion that Microsoft is the “only” company capable of merging hardware and software into forms that businesses and consumers find appealing, but Nadella must do his best to reassert his company’s position as a technology leader. Nadella indicated near the end of his email that he would follow through on the “One Microsoft” strategy formulated under Ballmer, which includes a massive reorganization currently underway. Microsoft faces several challenges in the years ahead, including the need to reassert itself in a consumer market dominated by Apple and Google. Is Nadella up to the task?

Submission + - Satya Nadella is The New Microsoft CEO

SmartAboutThings writes: Microsoft has been hunting for a new CEO ever since it has been announced that Steve Ballmer would step down from the position that he held for more than 13 years. Back in August 23, Microsoft said that Ballmer would resign within 12 months and that moment has come today as Microsoft’s Board of Directors has appointed Satya Nadella as the Chief Executive Officer and member of the Board of Directors. Nadella had previously worked as the Executive Vice President of Microsoft’s Cloud and Enterprise group. Also, Bill Gates, the iconic Microsoft Founder will be supporting Nadella in shaping new technology and products as John Thompson, a lead independent director for the Board of Directors, will take over the role of Chairman of the Board of Directors that Gates held.

Moreover, when a GUI is released, I'd like it to be tested beforehand. Also, it should come with the basic features any decent GUI has. How come something like Unity can be released, replacing the classic gnome, being a bug nest, missing so obvious needy features. That's beyond me. "tinkering and configuring" is the least of my problems.
