Comment Re:Not a surprise (Score 1) 210

I think it's more accurate to say steel workers expected to continue getting a good wage for doing the work they've always done while their bosses decided to grab more money for themselves and outsource.

Do you know people who actually worked there? Yes, CEOs and administrators will get a huge paycheck compared to normal workers in any big business. That's just the United States. But, do you know anyone who actually worked there?

My father's job the last few years he was there before retirement consisted of watching VHS tapes he brought from home and occasionally signing out a tool to a worker. He got $60k a year for that....along with around 30 days paid vacation a year, healthcare, etc. Then he retired and got a nice pension. That was the 80s.

Workers at US Steel were making huge paychecks...especially for the time and place. Every time the company tried to scale back...every time the contract was up, they'd strike. The company couldn't even fire someone without ok'ing it with the union. So, how exactly were they going to compete with ANYONE when they couldn't control labor costs at all? The union had convinced the workers that they DESERVED the outrageous pay and benefits. So, they ran US Steel into the ground....bled it dry and kept it from competing.

Basically, they make it easy to understand and easy to accomplish to enter your credit card information to make a purchase, but make you jump through other hoops to use parental controls, add spending limits, etc. The fact one of the remedies the Playstation rep proved was to delete the credit card info says it all.

They should be required to get permission for each specific charge and make it very clear that it is a new charge. As it is, they're doing just like strip clubs and slyly running up your tab once they get your credit card on file.

Then, they give you less power and claim this is to take on the 3060 ti. Sure, few games utilize ray tracing now, but it IS the future. None of AMD's cards can do DLSS (proprietary), they can't do an AMD alternative to DLSS and raytracing is a major performance hit for them. That is abhorrent. It's something both the right and the left do, but the right and the left also have instances where they make legitimate comparisons based upon their point of view. If you see Republicans putting children in cages, think they're making those children suffer, treating them like animals, then shipping them off to the very countries they fled for their lives, then yes...the comparison is legitimate. If you believe a fetus is a baby, think abortion is killing millions of babies, then yes, the comparison is legitimate. If you compare the Rwandan genocide to the Holocaust, that's a legitimate comparison. But, "I say things that offend people, so they're upset with me and that makes me a victim just like the Jews in the Holocaust", that's repugnant.

If you compare the Holocaust to the normal, every day it shows you don't really understand the depravity of the Holocaust. You're attempting, whether consciously or not, to belittle the victims of the Holocaust and their suffering. Now, in both of the cases I stated above, someone can make the mistake that they are dead wrong - that there is a lot missing from the equation, etc. and that is nothing like the Holocaust. But, in both those cases the person is taking what they believe to be a case of great human suffering and comparing it to what they know to be a former case of great human suffering. But, "I face consequences for the things I say and the way I act" ? No. That's completely belittling the holocaust.

Ah yes... all of a sudden Israel has to be brought into the discussion when speaking about Jewish people.

1. Israel is the historic homeland of Jews and is the only predominantly Jewish country in the world, but all Jewish people are not Israelis nor do they have allegiances to Israel.

2. It makes sense that Israel would not extradite its citizens when antiSemites frequently falsely accuse Jews of crimes or have inherent bias towards Jewish people. Many countries, including the US, do not extradite their citizens when they believe their citizens will not be treated fairly.

3. As far as your comment about Bernie Madoff, you and the article he cited neglected to mention that many of his victims were Jewish. Yes, it was obviously a concern that it was fuel to antiSemitism because people kept pointing out he was Jewish. When's the last time you saw them stress a murderer's Christianity? Yet, what if the murderer were Islamic or in the country illegally. It's not about "stereotypes existing for a reason". It's about the fact that people suffer from confirmation bias and love to reinforce their stereotypes because it makes them feel justified.

So, it's no surprise people were concerned that Madoff committed financial crimes and people kept reporting on his Jewishness

Nope. Jew is the correct term. Like Christian, American or Republican. The fact that you think it's "not quite right" apparently pisses off many Jews

Actually, I am Jewish...so I got a bit of a laugh with you trying to say I'm "pissing off many Jews". While I may be guilty of pissing off many Jewish people in my life, I can assure you it's not because of this. While there is talk about "reclaiming the word" I don't think anyone will try to say that it doesn't provoke an initial reaction hearing a gentile say it. Like many other words that became slurs for ethnic groups, we may and do refer to ourselves as Jews, but hearing someone outside the group use the term still stands your hairs on end. That is the real reason speech writers will actually use "Jewish". It's because "Jew" is a loaded word that often produces that visceral gut feeling and, if followed by anything even remotely ambiguous will make headlines whereas "Jewish" is safer.

Good ole slashdot...cover a post about antiSemitism and have someone post something borderline antiSemitic in the comments.

First, the more acceptable term is "Jewish". Calling someone a Jew doesn't sound quite right.

and saying "Jews" are "supposed to look out for each other" implies that they have more loyalty to each other than everyone else. It leads to all the familiar antiSemitic tropes about how they're scheming against the gentiles, can't be trusted, etc.

It's the same as with any other ethnic group: they may share a common experience through their Jewishness, but that only goes so far. If he's a stranger and competing with another stranger for a job when they have equal qualifications, equally likeable, etc. it may tip the scale in his favor if the person doing the hiring is Jewish. But, if all things are not equal, don't expect them to favor the Jewish candidate just because he's Jewish.

No, I'm proposing that you pull your head out of your ass and understand this is no longer a "private" matter when you attempt to censor and discredit half a fucking country.

So, let me get this straight... Karen can refuse to bake a cake for a gay couple, refuse to rent her wedding chapel to them, refuse to officiate their wedding or even issue them a marriage license and that's perfectly ok and acceptable, but lock the president out of twitter and you've gone a step too far?

First, you're not half the country. If half the country wanted to take part in sedition, then we'd have civil war. We don't have that regardless of what flag you think represents you. What we have is a vocal minority that attempted a failed coup and are now whining because they did fail and are facing consequences for doing so.

You better believe that there are a lot of people in the country who believe it shouldn't stop with removing the platform that helped foment the violence (Inciting violence is not protected free speech and there is legal precedent to that. Even the government can clamp down on that.) Everyone that took part in this or incited others to do so should face charges. These people attacked the seat of the US government, attempted to stop the counting of the democratic vote and instead install their leader by fiat. That is treason.

Now remember, it is the conservative movement that has pushed for corporations to be counted as people and for their actions to be counted as free speech - not to mention free speech to include denying someone else their rights or freedoms (as in issuing a marriage license). No, Twitter isn't Hobby Lobby, but it does have rights granted to individuals thanks to the conservative movement. It's ironic that the Trumpers now want to take on "Big Tech" aka big corporations in technology, when they've spent years giving them more and more rights/control ranging from individual rights to dissolving net neutrality. This doesn't even take into account the clear violations of Terms of Service.... just the fact you've put these corporations in a very enviable position then started a fight with them.

Well, how else would you deal with an armed uprising on your borders? We know how the US would deal with it...in Haiti and Cuba we invade and slaughter whenever someone gets in power we don't like and would raze the entire country if they tried to make war with us.

So, how do you deal with people almost daily bombing your civilians...not being able to have outdoor playgrounds in Sderot and other cities (unless you have concrete tubes for the kids to run into when they're bombed...but indoor playgrounds are preferred obviously, if you give them concrete to rebuild their houses, they use it to build tunnels to attack you... anything they're allowed to have, they find a way to utilize it to fight against you. If any of them speak out or even are accused of being Israeli sympathizers, they're hung in the streets.

How do you deal with that? Think about it. Israel declared independence with the end of the British mandate and all the arab countries declared war... It's true that some Palestinians were expelled from Israel at this time and it's also true that an equal number of Jews were expelled from the surrounding Arab countries at this time as well - some of whom lived in tents in Israel until the 1960s because there wasn't enough housing. But, Palestine didn't declare independence. They went to war. When the war was over, Jordan took over the West Bank. Jordan didn't give them independence. They carved out their own section of Palestine as their own country, declared independence for it as the nation of Jordan, and occupied the West Bank. They set up military governors in all the areas and then annexed it a year later. They gave them Jordanian citizenship, but not independence.

Then, they had the war of 67 where Israel took control of some portions when they invaded....but Jordan didn't drop their claims to the territory until 1988....deciding that NOW Palestine deserved its own state..but they hadn't had control of it since 67. The other Arab countries around won't let them emigrate and assimilate. They treat them as second class citizens or worse. They're used as pawns in a long, drawn out proxy war with Israel.

So, what is Israel to do? Lay down and let the Palestinians kill them? No other refugees can pass on refugee status to their children who weren't born when they were displaced.... in no other population in the world. But, that's somehow granted to the Palestinians. They're kept right in that spot, given no options by the surrounding Arab countries and they're a constant armed insurrection on the borders of Israel. So, what should Israel do?

What they're doing is the only thing they can do. It's not pretty. It's not all sunshine and rainbows. It's the only option they have short of genocide. In my opinion, it shows the greatness of the country that they're not all racist towards Palestinians and attempting genocide. Make no mistake...if they wanted to, they have always had the military might to do so. But, they can't allow all the Palestinian descendants of the displaced to come into Israel, become the majority, and place the Jews back under Arab rule. The other Arab countries won't allow the Palestinians to assimilate into their countries... they'll provide them arms to fight, but not full citizenship. They won't give them the wealth and houses they seized from Jews they expelled... so Israel is stuck.
