Comment Proper response to piracy (Score 2, Informative) 239

Many game developers are fed up with PC piracy and feel they are in a lose-lose situation and they don't want to choose between DRM-laden software or Internet activation... these companies (maker of Crysis comes to mind) vow to develop more heavily for the "console" platforms (XBox, etc.) because piracy is less common there. Of course, if Crysis 3 is console-only, people will probably go the extra mile and modify their boxes and pirate it anyways, but that's beside the point. The point is, game devs (along with authors and other artists) have manned up for ages and when piracy becomes an issue for them, they find a solution that doesn't involve hundreds of frivolous lawsuits that is harming everybody with its costs in tying up our legal system.

I think you forgot the biggest (first) step - creating a GMail account and logging in.

Interestingly, my brother-in-law just bought a new phone (I don't even know what the heck model it is, but it runs Android). It would not let him sync to his Facebook contacts, he was required to create a GMail account to use the phone. Didn't sound like opting out was possible.

The Google employees involved in this Getting Kenyan Businesses Online project were probably just thinking about their precious bonuses when they chose to lie about Google's relationship with Mocality. The employees caught lying on tape will be fired and any employees who don't pretend to know nothing about this will be fired also. Google has a brand to nurture and so they'll be appropriately apologetic as they always are when they cross boundaries in their pursuit of corporate domination.

However, the Mocality blog moans about how Google manually scraped their database; this is legal as pointed out in an earlier comment.

The blog's claim that Google is offering competing services isn't even accurate because all Mocality does is list websites, not host them... so what does Mocality expect to win from Google?

If the players weren't huddling all the time, the play clock could be reduced by a significant number of seconds... making the game much faster paced. The players wouldn't be able to keep up with the pace like this so the dynamics of the game plays would change. Also, fans would lose the beer-drinking, pissing, and eating time that is available between plays.

Comment Tunneling below the ice (Score 1) 156

I was just watching reruns of the old History channel "The Universe" shows not long ago. The ice on Europa is apparently *very* thick (I think the show said 100 feet at least). So, let's say NASA's rover lands on Europa and melts its way through the ice to search the water there - when it takes nice hi-rez photos of critters licking the camera, how will it send it back to earth? I can see the transmissions going through "space" OK (little interference) but wouldn't 100 feet of ice put a bit of a damper on the signal?
