Good that you're citing your sources. But how does it work legally? Does the CC license in SE allow you to copy and reuse code that is more than a short snippet? Does your product have a compatible license?

I see no differences from source and binary: most people just need the binary, and will only download that. But you can distribute them both, and you should do that, if you want to call your product "open source".

And, in any case, people don't have the money or resources to train the model *today*. That's not an excuse not to distribute the source.

Aren't the pre-trained weights basically the equivalent of a compiled binary? You can run them as they are, but they are an unmodifiable black box, and you don't have access to the source material in case you want to tweak the process that generated them.

The danger is people dodging their responsibilities. If the answer to "why did you bomb that hospital" is "because the computer told me so", and that's acceptable, it becomes a problem.

Well, you can't change their password, but you can still read all their data.

The critical factor is not local vs. Microsoft accounts, it's having full disk encryption vs. not having it.

Certificates are almost certainly an indication that the programmer isn't any good. There's an exception, where someone could be young and naive, and they're going for their 1st or 2nd job.

This must be like public healthcare: every developed country has it figured out and working reasonably well, apart from the US. So who is at fault here?

It's an authoritarian regime. All that's going to happen is that investors take a massive haircut. Chinese people will realize that they have to work into their 80s just to put food on the table. The boondoggles have already been built. What doesn't exist if future economic growth and productivity improvements. The regime will not collapse. It will eventually have to acknowledge that they never closed the middle-income trap. Poor chinese will be worked to the bone to prop up the geopolitical aspirations of the CCP. There will be social unrest. Maybe some -- or a lot -- if sabre rattling to keep the regime popular.

The amount of profit is arbitrary, and relates to how much money the CCP moves from one industry to another in the form of subsidies. If the chinese system were more open, we could run some numbers and actually figure this out.

There's no such thing as a profitable private company in an authoritarian state.

China hugely overpays for talent, because "skill researchers" would prefer to live anywhere but China. That includes China, which is undergoing a massive brain drain.

Authoritarian regimes are notoriously bad at innovation. China would do fine if it could shed the CCP.
