Submission + - Privacy Issues Of Data Collecting (net-security.org)

An anonymous reader writes: Will 2010 see the beginning of a change in regulations regarding net privacy? It's hard to tell. The issue has been a matter for dispute for quite some time now, but there have been no significant steps toward dealing with it and the "enemy" is strong: money. The simple fact is that advertising is what makes free content possible. And, if we look at it from the marketers point of view, we can't but agree that they have to get something in return. But, looking at it from our common user perspective, we feel a little naked, a little vulnerable knowing that someone out there can use the gathered information to steer us towards choices we may wish we hadn't.

Submission + - Neuroscience - How to Train the Aging Brain (nytimes.com)

Tx-0 writes: Sometimes it seems that adults find it harder to learn something new: that seems true, as long as we try to teach them the same way we teach to children.
From the article: Jack Mezirow, a professor emeritus at Columbia Teachers College, has proposed that adults learn best if presented with what he calls a “disorienting dilemma,” or something that “helps you critically reflect on the assumptions you’ve acquired.”

Submission + - Yellowstone Supervolcano larger than first thought (ksl.com)

drewtheman writes: New studies of the plumbing that feeds the Yellowstone supervolcano in Wyoming's Yellowstone National Park shows the plume and the magma chamber under the volcano are larger than first thought and contradicts claims that only shallow hot rock exists. University of Utah research professor of geophysics Robert Smith led four separate studies that verify a plume of hot and molten rock at least 410 miles deep that rises at an angle from the northwest.

Submission + - Make use of a provider locked VoIP ATA (atmurray.net)

atmurray writes: I've done a bit of a write up on how to use Asterisk to make use of a provider locked Netgear TA612V ATA. It doesn't involve hacking the firmware or altering the ATA in any way and the concept is probably applicable to other devices. I don't believe (but I'm no lawyer!) there should be any legal concerns governing the method I suggest.

Submission + - More effective virus/SPAM scanning using GPUs (kaspersky.com)

gupg writes: Kaspersky Labs announced that they’re leveraging GPU computing (CUDA) with NVIDIA Tesla GPUs to dramatically improve the performance of their security software solutions by *360 times* when compared to a Core2 Duo. Now thats a big speedup! There are other previous works like ClamAV on GPU and SNORT on GPU.

Kaspersky Lab uses the NVIDIA Tesla S1070 1U GPU system to accelerate the screening of malicious programs using a unique file similarity detection technology. When the Kaspersky anti-virus software on a computer suspects that a file may be malicious, even though it may not match any known virus signatures, the software uploads this file to the Kaspersky Lab data center. The server software then compares the suspected file against more than 50 million known good files and programs. Using complex anti-virus and SPAM detection algorithms, Kaspersky’s server software identifies the risk level of the suspected file and informs the client computer on what kind of preventive action to take..

Comment I get far too many mod points (Score 1) 443

It seems like I have a continuous stream of mod points and usually receive more points the day after I finish spending the last bunch. After awhile it begins to feel like a responsibility. I am a fairly ignorant person and as such do not have anything productive to contribute towards most discussions, so do not mind helping moderate...but is it possible that some individuals are in the same boat as me, and are just negging people because it is fun?

I think you should only begin receiving mod points after a couple weeks of browsing, but not be given points with such a high frequency until you fulfill some sort of karma/time requirement.
