Comment Destroy the drive. (Score 1) 2

Well you could get a new drive and put the old platters in it. The clicking is a power issue I believe. But I wouldn't RMA it myself. Drives are cheap. Next thing you need to do is start using some form of encryption, if you have financial information and other important docs. Further, you should have a backup scheme that lets you walk away from almost any failure other than your house falling down. Some will say use the offsite consumer storage companies, but I have dealt with many and many of them plain old sucked. If your comfortable with ssh, just get a cheap shell account somewhere that allows backups, avoid the GUI backup terd companies.

Space shifting I believe is illegal since the dmca, therefore by ripping your cd's you did break the law. Prior to the dmca, what you are doing was legal.
the court also rejected space shifting, stating that consumer protection or convenience was not paramount in copyright law, but rather protecting the rights of the copyright holders.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Space_shifting There are still some court disagreements however.

We all to some extent have information on the net. Your argument is not special or new. By googling your candidates you are screwing yourself more than your potential candidates. You are showing your weakness as an interviewer by handicapping your judgement with preconceived notions based on how you interpret some ASCII and some picture. Congrats. Would suck to lose a potentially great employee because they went to a party you didn't agree with.

Comment Tor is a terrible program (Score 0) 122

Tor is far overrated. I'm surprised it has any notoriety. Last time I used it, which was a few months ago for a research project, it was quite easy to set your self up as an exit router and capture clear text information for mail, telnet, ftp, etc. It only protects to the extent of the knowledge of the user (like most systems/programs/features). Frankly if your not encrypted end to end and only using IP addresses I would avoid it completely. The added latency of around 19 seconds for just google.com to load from the word go makes it suck even more, however that is not a Tor issue directly, that is from people loading down the network with p2p traffic. In summary, use only if encrypted end to end and no DNS is utilized, to protect yourself....and order a latte, because your going to be there a while. Don't believe me? Look at some of the research the Uni of Colorado and Washington have done. Mine was based on their great work.
