Comment External GPU to the rescue (Score 2) 48

The fan noise on my 2015 Macbook Pro was getting unbearable, to the point where I bought a few ice-packs to sit the laptop on. I could get about 45 minutes to an hour of relative quiet before it would start howling at full bore again, and I'd make a trip to the freezer and swap the pack out for a cold one.
Shortly thereafter, I bought an external GPU to help speed up a few things (3D drafting, mostly), and much to my surprise and joy, the fan noise on the laptop dropped /significantly/. I'd highly recommend that move for anyone who's trying to get another year or two out of their machine, but can't stand the noise. It was a USB3 Sonnet enclosure, but the lightning to USB3 adapter + a driver hack has been super stable for the better part of a year now.

1) Tip in cash. Everywhere. Restaurants, Cabs, Deliveries... whatever. It's the only way to be sure your money is going where you think.
2) Every once in a while, lets just kill a few a few of these shifty CEOs. Make it gruesome & public; put some real fear into the rest of these psychopaths.

As I understand, the arrangement is similar to that between the MTA and Intersection/Alphabet - The MTA (or city in this case) bears little to none of the cost, while the Corporation who installed them makes up the cost through advertising.

I design and oversee the execution of plenty of digital installations that have to withstand the elements & abuse from the public, and $20k a pop is not surprising at all. A daylight visible screen alone is like $3k - $5k, plus all the misc power & networking gak, ventilation & and possibly heating to keep the stuff within operating temps. Wrap that up in a stainless steel enclosure, bolt it to the ground, and get it powered and wired, and I'd be pleasantly surprised if the subcontractor made their 15%.
