Yellowstone Supervolcano Larger Than First Thought 451

drewtheman writes "New studies of the plumbing that feeds the Yellowstone supervolcano in Wyoming's Yellowstone National Park shows the plume and the magma chamber under the volcano are larger than first thought and contradicts claims that only shallow hot rock exists. University of Utah research professor of geophysics Robert Smith led four separate studies that verify a plume of hot and molten rock at least 410 miles deep that rises at an angle from the northwest."

What annoys you about onenote? The only thing that really pisses me off is that regardless of what amount of proc I tell it to use at which times, it tends to lock up solid for a few seconds to 20 seconds or so every once in a while. Especially when I paste an image into it (I have ocr of images disabled supposedly) or when I use the pen for the first time since a hibernate (did it forget I had a pen?). I can live with both of those. For my mode of thought a tablet with onenote is just too handy to give up. Google needs to come up with a replacement. I'd like to have google notes on my phone and tablet so I can easily send lists and stuff to my phone from the tablet and take notes impromptu then sync them back to my tablet. (I do have onenote mobile, but I don't want to type. I think better when I write and draw images for some reason.)

I disagree entirely. I have an HTC touch pro and I have put WM 6.5 on it. I get about 2 days of medium use out of it when I don't charge (though I charge almost every night). I reboot it about once every 2 weeks or so. It is generally snappy and responsive as long as I'm not running ridiculous amounts of apps. It has all the features I want and if I can't find a free app for what I want to do I can write one. The battery reporting has never been wrong since I got the phone on the day of launch.

My mother has an Iphone as do several people here at work. The only thing I'd really like to have is the multitouch. The "zoom wheel" thing on this leaves something to be desired. I've played with the G1 many times (my cousin has one as does my best friend and brother in law) and the only draw for me for that one would be googles apps. (most of which work fine anyway).

I would have never come back if not for the changes they have made to leveling. Several of my friends would never have started playing. I am positive that the number of people who dislike the accelerated leveling are in the minority.

If they made it to where you could start alts at level 80 when you've already leveled a character to 80 then I would play considerably more than I already do. Sinking that much time into a character before you can even really start to play the game is simply stupid. I don't have 8 hours a day to play. I'm glad you do.

Oh wait no, I think you're right. Please make this game even more grindy.

I know it isn't word, but is there anything more awesome than OneNote (and the way it integrates with outlook, excel, and word) combined with a tablet PC? I type rather quickly, but for working ideas out nothing beats a whiteboard for me. Onenote + tabletPC is the ultimate whiteboard. Is there anything better? Of what I've used nothing else comes close. Really wish openoffice had great tablet support.

I have always hated this kind of hyperbole.

What they mean to say is that there are at most 10 civilizations hell-bent on exploring the galaxy. There could be millions that don't give a flying crap about us for all we know. Why do they have to have the same motivations that we have? Once they've hit 3 or 4 solar systems what will they find in others that they couldn't in their own? Or floating out in freespace? Why would we assume EVERY civilization will become motivated to expend all that energy to explore?

Windows 7 Pre-Orders Top Vista's In Just 8 Hours 279

Barence writes "In order to ensure Windows 7 got off to a better start than Vista in the UK, Microsoft slashed the cost of Home and Home Professional by a third on promotional copies which were sold on a 'first come, first served basis while stocks last.' The promotion ensured Windows 7 shot to the top of Amazon's charts when it was released yesterday, with the online retailer claiming that 'sales in the first eight hours outstripped those of Windows Vista's entire 17-week pre-order period.' The price of pre-ordering Windows 7 has now shot up to £80, after the £50 copies sold out within a day."

City Slicker Birds Shun Their Country Cousins 95

According to scientists, city Great Tits prefer other city Great Tits over country Great Tits. (Lets act like adults). The researchers found that the city dwellers responded more strongly to songs of fellow city dwellers and the same held true for the bumpkins. The average minimum pitch of male Great Tit songs in noisy urban areas was higher than in quieter, rural areas just a few miles away. Dr Rupert Marshall, of Aberystwyth University, Wales, and his team recorded bird song in 20 different cities in Britain. He says, "People speak louder and higher in noisy places like pubs and bars but still recognise their friends' voices once they go outside. Great tits seem to learn the high notes from their neighbours but don't respond as strongly to lower rural tones even when it's quiet."
