Comment Hated XII (Score 1) 401

Really? Gambits ruined XII for me. You know something is wrong when you enter a boss battle and don't have to press a single button.

I didn't like the XII's story either. The characters, while not stereotypical, were incredibly hollow. Nobody really drove the story forward for me. *SPOILER* I hated the story twist. I found out that that dark ghosts behind people were actually Gods who had been controlling the destiny of everything for some time. After that I said "This is bullshit" and turned the game off.*SPOILER*

I've been playing since VI and this was the first one I quit.

I've gotten a few tickets in my day but I never became jaded. The fee is a penalty. Demerit points are a penalty. Yes, it provides revenue. Would you rather have them haul your ass into jail everytime you broke the speed limit? It'll take the points/fee thanks.

Guess what: police and crews coming in to clean up accidents costs... money! Accidents happen. Unsafe drivers tend to cause more accidents.

Comment Apple patent blows my mind (Score 2, Interesting) 278

Here's why the patent system is broken.

Apple has a patent application for arranging music information (read: any information) into different shapes. http://www.patentlyapple.com/patently-apple/2010/09/apple-provides-us-with-a-peek-at-spirals-a-new-itunes-ui-feature.html. They describe spirals, squares, rectangles, a helix from the side. Even a map of the USA. But why stop there? You might as well just patent information and pictures arranged into any pleasing geometric or recognizable form! Abstract goastee arrangment? Sure! Lady Gaga's face? Why not! Patented granted!

People can take things that are completely abstract and patent the whole net of ideas. Not only are patents too abstract, they usually aren't novel. Like this Apple one. It's sick.

Here's an idea. Cut the patents and rely on copyright after the fact. Or would that require that people actually do work before getting a reward?

Comment Re:Comment your code (Score 1) 590

I recently began work in a team whose codebase is largely uncommented. Not only are there usually no comments within functions, but there aren't even function and class header comments. Needless to say, it's really annoying having to guess what functions do, what the return value means, etc. Often code alone isn't enough. Failing to write comments just adds more work time later on.

Alright then.

BES is just an e-mail communication link for Blackberries.

BES and BIS includes the MDS (mobile data service) which also encrypts most data. There are certain exclusions such as streaming technologies which may not go through RIM's infrastructure. But it is an end-to-end solution.

Now when a company hosts their own BES I believe that non-email data will still go through RIM's servers. Not sure if a company can host their own MDS servers though.

So that's what I know. I know that most people on /. will tear you apart for the slightest bit of misinformation. So I decided to say little. Sorry if that ticked you off.

Same language? C# and Javascript have nearly identical syntax. I think it's completely unreasonable to expect someone to invent a brand new syntax for every programming language.

Some of the same classes? Look at how many other languages have analogous classes in their libraries. It's irresponsible not to provide string utilities, for one.

Are you serious. Why in the world would anyone market a software platform to the Chinese: the most pirating, copyright infringing, knock-off producing nation on the entire planet?

It doesn't matter how cheap you make this thing. People won't develop for it because the Chinese will hack and mod the thing in less than a week. Guaranteed.

This venture is futile.
