well ya, but they listed those separately.
well ya, but they listed those separately.
holy heck.
I just re-read that and they are saying $1M per DAY for bandwidth!
In that case, you can buy 7.5 Tb/s for $1M per day.
Their numbers are off by orders of magnitude.
From TFA:
Bandwidth: If YouTube will get 375 million unique visitors in 2009 and each user downloads video at 400 kbit/s (based on figures from a range of sources), the cost to Google of YouTube bandwidth is a minimum of $1 million a day. This assumes YouTube is paying a minimum of 50 percent of the lowest market rate for megabit-per-second services.
wtf?
I do not think those numbers mean what you think they mean.
Visitors per year is irrelevant.
Simultaneous viewers is what matters.
$1M buys you 250 Gb/s at the 'best' market rate of $4/Mb/s.
(one might also presume that google is not f-ing insane and actually peers all over the place and does not pay transit for everything)
250Gb/s divided by 400Kb/s is 655K viewers.
I do not know how many simultaneous viewers youtube has but something called 'youtube live' may have had 700k simultaneous and that was billed as 'unusually high'.
Meh, whether it is torture or not would depend on the details and frankly it hardly matters since it is highly likely that Saddam Hussein was tortured in more obvious ways anyway.
It is however clearly Schadenfreude and the South Park writers should be ashamed of themselves.
Anything-goes in a cartoon. In real life we need people to act with a little civility.
A typical web server will have a symmetric network connection and will be using almost entirely the outbound bandwidth.
If you are sending 90Mb/s and receiving 5Mb/s on your heavily loaded web server reducing theat 5Mb/s to 3 or 2 is utterly useless.
Well heck, *I* sure as hell didn't authorize this.
I demand a public inquiry!
But they are wildly expensive for no discernable reason.
Seconded. The certificate is correct.
I don't know what that verisign link is all about but it is useless.
You certainly cannot trust information within a web page to verify the identity of the server.
Click on the the little 'lock' icon on the bottom right corner of your browser to inspect the certificate.
What if I am a smart ass and said one tenth of a decade...
If you were a smart-ass you would say "I know that you're looking for '1 year' but since a year is defined as one earth's-trip around the sun it is self-referential and therefore a useless answer. If you want to know how long it takes the earth to revolve around the sun you'll need a system of measurement that is not based on 'the time takes for the earth to revolve around the sun'. The frequency of oscillations of a quartz crystal or some such thing would be good. Since I do not know that number my answer will have to be "I don't know"."
Folks have been calling for better editors for ages to no avail.
Perhaps the time has come to try something different.
How much would it cost to send kdawson to remedial english classes?
I'll chip in five bucks.
He didn't say it was irony.
He said it was "what we call irony" which is correct. Slashdot posters call lots of things which are not irony irony.
lolz
I am standing by for the impending corrections to my post.
Hell, people here were debating on whether or not the theory of...
Remove the 'on' after 'debating'.
But on the average, we are pretty backward.
Remove the 'the' preceding 'average'.
What would the Internet do without me?
srsly.
Send kdawson to fark where he belongs!
Keep trying, you'll construct a coherent sentence sooner or later.
EDITORS, DO YOUR JOBS. If there is a fallacy in the summary, either correct it, or DO NOT POST THE STORY.
oh you crazy idealist.
I want to live in THAT world.
