Phillips have a very long history if making things as difficult as possible for everyone else. Going right back to their early TVs and radios.

Philips are very active patent trolls as well. They own patents (that they got by purchasing Color Kinetics some years ago) on technologies as broad as having an LED with a constant current driver (pretty much how all decent LED lighting works). They sue any successful manufacturer of LED lights and actively run a protection racket. Even buying LED modules and drivers from Philips to use in your light fittings doesn't make you imune, you also need to license their 'technologies'.

Submission + - NASA names its astronauts for the first Dragon and CST-100 flights

schwit1 writes: NASA today named the four government astronauts that will fly on the first manned demo flights to ISS of SpaceX's Dragon and Boeing's CST-100.

Bob Behnken, Eric Boe, Doug Hurley and Sunita Williams are veteran test pilots who have flown on the shuttle and the International Space Station.

NASA said the four astronauts will train with both companies and have not yet been assigned to flights. Two-person crews will fly the first test flights by each capsule, after they have completed an orbital test flight without people on board. Company proposals anticipate an all-NASA crew flying SpaceX's Dragon test flight, with Boeing's CST-100 carrying a split NASA-Boeing crew. Boeing has not yet identified its astronaut.

Submission + - Solar activity predicted to fall 60% in 2030s

sycodon writes: A new model of the Sun's solar cycle is producing unprecedentedly accurate predictions of irregularities within the Sun's 11-year heartbeat. The model draws on dynamo effects in two layers of the Sun, one close to the surface and one deep within its convection zone. Predictions from the model suggest that solar activity will fall by 60 per cent during the 2030s to conditions last seen during the 'mini ice age' that began in 1645.

Submission + - Kim Jong Un Claims to Have Cured AIDS, Ebola and Cancer

jones_supa writes: North Korea has created a wonder drug which not only cures AIDS, but also eradicates Ebola and cancer, if the latest proclamation from the country's news agency is to be believed. An announcement says that the miracle cure consists of ginseng grown from fertilizer and rare earth elements. The drug's website cites a medical study in Africa where the product was tested on HIV positive patients. It records that every single participant in the trial noted an improvement, with 56% being completely cured and 44% noting a considering improvement in their condition. Among other benefits, the North Korean scientists also revealed that the drug is capable of curing a number of cancers, but did not provide details of the medical trials which support this claim. It's also good to remember that the state has previously claimed that Kim Jong Il invented the hamburger.

Exactly which 4 year old MacBook can't runthe latest Mac OS? It's officially supported on MacBooks back to 2007/8. And why is it Apple's fault that an old version of Pro Tools won't run on the latest Mac OS? Your friend could have just updated Itunes on his older OS (it runs on anything after 10.6.8), and in fact you don't even need iTunes to use an iPhone...
