Comment Cultural thing (Score 1) 449

There's absolutely nothing wrong with a bit of sensible plagiarism. Plagiarism is a very cultural thing for us Westerners [especially]. In some countries [Middle East] you will find that you do not get top marks unless you copy everything your professor told you, letter to letter. If someone makes a scientific discovery and states: "I have proven that the sky is blue". Now I am writing a paper and I want to use his research as a reference and in order to not plagiarise I have to paraphrase (I could quote but I won't in this example). So how do I do that for such a simple and short statement? "It has been proven that the heavens are azure." This decreases readability, often adds to length and decreases efficiency. Conclusion: Plagiarism is a part of our [bullshit] Western culture and it is counter productive; referencing alone should be enough.

I listened to the UK's representative at the LHC project speak at a local society last winter. She explained this in detail and said it was laughable how the Sun newspaper talked about these things without knowing anything. The energy of the colliding particles is about the same as two mosquito flies colliding with each other at around 15ms1.

As a resident of the Arctic I can say that all electrical and communication equipment works fine, even during a solar wind. I think it was in 2003 or so when a pretty big solar wind hit the Earth and all the doomsayers were going on about it but nothing happened, nothing at all. We did get a lovely aurora borealis display though!

Comment Music does help (Score 1) 1019

I recently did a study skills programme at my university. They insist that listening to music is helpful and helps you keep your concentration. Your boss does not sound very open minded, perhaps it is correct that other employees have been whining. I also recently worked in a laboratory. I was told portable music players are fine and sometimes helpful but however, I was not allowed to use them when working with hazardous chemicals and such.
