Submission + - Fort Bragg's Twitter account wasn't hacked. Admin erred sending those racy texts (washingtonpost.com)

operator_error writes: A fusillade of explicit tweets circulated on the Twitter account for Fort Bragg on Wednesday afternoon, with comments to a sex worker as earnest as they were graphic.

The tweets triggered exasperation among service members on Twitter and panic at the installation in North Carolina, as officials there rushed to determine how exactly a lewd stream of consciousness ended up on the account for the most populous Army post in the country.

“This morning, at the initiation of an investigation into yesterday’s incident regarding inappropriate tweets on the Fort Bragg Twitter account, an administrator for the account identified himself as the source of the tweets," Col. Joe Buccino, a spokesperson for the XVIII Airborne Corps, said in a statement Thursday.

"Appropriate action is underway,” he added.

The woman at the center of the controversy, who identifies herself as Quinn Finite online, embraced the visibility the tweets earned her, including 1,300 new subscribers on OnlyFans and growing, she said. On Wednesday, following the uproar, she offered a 50 percent military discount.

Submission + - New green technology generates electricity 'out of thin air' (phys.org)

operator_error writes: Scientists at the University of Massachusetts Amherst have developed a device that uses a natural protein to create electricity from moisture in the air, a new technology they say could have significant implications for the future of renewable energy, climate change and in the future of medicine.

As reported today in Nature, the laboratories of electrical engineer Jun Yao and microbiologist Derek Lovley at UMass Amherst have created a device they call an "Air-gen." or air-powered generator, with electrically conductive protein nanowires produced by the microbe Geobacter. The Air-gen connects electrodes to the protein nanowires in such a way that electrical current is generated from the water vapor naturally present in the atmosphere.

The new technology developed in Yao's lab is non-polluting, renewable and low-cost. It can generate power even in areas with extremely low humidity such as the Sahara Desert. It has significant advantages over other forms of renewable energy including solar and wind, Lovley says, because unlike these other renewable energy sources, the Air-gen does not require sunlight or wind, and "it even works indoors."

Submission + - Signing up with Amazon, Wal-Mart, or Uber forfeits your right to sue them (cnn.com)

DogDude writes: "Tucked into the sign-up process for many popular e-commerce sites and apps are dense terms-of-service agreements that legal experts say are changing the nature of consumer transactions, creating a veil of secrecy around how these companies function.
"The small print in these documents requires all signatories to agree to binding arbitration and to clauses that ban class actions. Just by signing up for these services, consumers give up their rights to sue companies like Amazon (AMZN), Uber (UBER) and Walmart (WMT) before a jury of their peers, agreeing instead to undertake a private process overseen by a paid arbitrator."

Comment Re:4K RCA 37 Inch for $150 at Walmart..best ever! (Score 1) 216

I just bought a $43 Vizio V-Series from Walmart for just over $300 incl tax. It works great for my I.T. work, claims to have Chroma 4:4:4 but I can't find a setting for it, although this torture test works fine for me. Plus great TV & sound with other great TV features + remote.

First I bought a 55" but it was just just bigger pixels and the large real estate meant looking too far away. Didn't like the larger pixels!

Normally WalMart's return policy for items is 14 days, but TVs are 90 so no risk! Also in July when Amazon advertised Black Friday in July, and Amazon, Target, etc got into also, Walmart advertised these TVs but the prices haven't changed since then (when I've been paying attention).

I went to WalMart with a HDMI cable and a notebook PC to test myself but the manager wouldn't let me, so I pointed out their return-policy is 90 days and said I had no choice but opt for it. And I used it, returning a 55" D-Series from Vizio. No hassle return! Had it just over 24 hours and the 43" is the sweet spot for computer usage by pros IMHO.

Computers are commodities, and Apple did really well to 'add value' with design for as long as they have. Just look at how much cash they raked in by introducing new colors of iMacs not that long ago. Tim Cook seems to know they sucked that well dry already, or at least doesn't want to pay John Ivey's fee anymore; seemingly prudent from the perspective of a CEO.

Submission + - Massive Tinder Photo Scrape Has Users Upset (techcrunch.com)

Frosty Piss writes: Images of Tinder users posting their sexiest selfies were swept up in a massive grab of some 40,000 photos from the dating app by a dataset collector who plans to use the selfies in artificial intelligence training, reports TechCrunch. Tinder said in a statement that the photo sweeper “violated the terms of our service” and “we are taking appropriate action and investigating further.” The creator of the data set, Stuart Colianni, has released it under a CC0: Public Domain License and also uploaded his scraper script to GitHub. He describes it as a “simple script to scrape Tinder profile photos for the purpose of creating a facial dataset,” saying his inspiration for creating the scraper was disappointment working with other facial data sets. He also describes Tinder as offering “near unlimited access to create a facial data set” and says scraping the app offers “an extremely efficient way to collect such data.”

Submission + - SWISS AIR abandons the rule of two-people in the cockpit (airlinerpulse.com)

loneship writes: As of Monday, May 1, 2017, the Swiss International Air Lines (SWISS) will abandon the rule of two people in the cockpit. An internal audit showed that this precautionary measure, taken in 2015 after the Germanwings crash, did not improve safety, according to the company officials.

Submission + - Hacker Leaks OITNB Season 5 After Failed Netflix Extortion Attempt

An anonymous reader writes: A hacker (or hacker group) known as The Dark Overlord (TDO) has leaked the first ten episodes of season 5 of the "Orange Is The New Black" show after two failed blackmail attempts, against Larson Studios and Netflix. The hacker said he stole hundreds of gigabytes of audio files from Larson Studios last December. TDO claims the studio initially agreed to pay a ransom of 50 Bitcoin ($67,000) by January 31, and the two parties even signed a contract, albeit TDO signed it using the name "Adolf Hitler."

This might have been the reason why the company thought this was a joke and didn't pay the ransom as initially agreed. At this point, the hacker turned from the studio to Netflix, but the company didn''t want to pay either. As a warning, the hacker leaked the first episode of season 5, but half a day later, he leaked 9 more. According to Netflix's website, season 5 is supposed to have 13 episodes and is scheduled for release in June, this year.

The hacker also claims he's in possession of shows and movies from other movie studios and television channels, such as FOX, IFC, NAT GEO, and ABC. Some of the titles include "Celebrity Apprentice," "NCIS Los Angeles," "New Girl," and "XXX The return of Xander Cage"
