Submission + - Voyager Reaches Mystery Interstellar Doorstep (discovery.com)

astroengine writes: Voyager’s prolonged journey into interstellar space took another dramatic turn when the intrepid space probe last summer passed into a bizarre and unanticipated cosmic hallway between the bubble of space under the sun’s influence and whatever lies beyond. On the celestial highway since September 1977, the Voyager 1 probe soared past Jupiter and Saturn in 1979 and 1980, respectively, then ended up an a path that led toward interstellar space. Eventually, the spacecraft will get there, but exactly when that will happen — and what else it may encounter before then — is anybody’s guess. “The results of the measurements from Voyager have been surprising us not just since last August, but for about the last 2.5 years,” astronomer Stamatios Krimigis, with Johns Hopkinds University’s Applied Physics Laboratory, told Discovery News.

Submission + - Gates Foundation Offers $100,000 To Design Next Gen Condom (medicaldaily.com)

ewolfson writes: The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is pledging $100,000 to promising ideas and up to $1 million for ideas that have been deemed to have huge potential to be game changers. They are encouraging inventors, scientists and just about anyone to submit a two page proposal.

The attempt is to bring together people from different backgrounds (neurobiology, vascular biology, etc) or inventors who will have ideas about different designs that may work better and be more durable. They feel that using new materials may preserve or even enhance sensation while preserving the integrity of the protection a condom offers.

Condoms have been used for around 400 years; with people originally using dried animal intestines as a sheath to prevent unwanted pregnancies. Technology has advanced quite a bit in the last few centuries and condoms are now produced and distributed worldwide. Latex condoms were introduced in the early 1900's and the design has barely changed in the last 50 years. This is one reason that that the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation see the potential to make large strides in public health.

Innovative ideas for condom design don't need to be high tech or made of some exotic material. For example Origami Condoms offer a design improvement that replicates the sensations of unprotected sex, with no loss of safety.

Submission + - Cultural Barriers Discourage Women From Careers in Science, Study Reports

An anonymous reader writes: Women tend to stray away from careers in science and technology due to cultural barriers and not because they are not qualified for the jobs that are usually male dominated. According to a new study, researchers concluded that women end up not going into the sciences because their intellectual abilities open up more career options, options that might not be as scrutinized by society. The researchers from the University of Pittsburgh observed how other factors, specifically gender barriers, influence women's career choices as well.

Submission + - Spanish Open Source Group Files Complaint Over Microsoft EUFI Boot (globalpost.com) 1

sl4shd0rk writes: Hispalinux, which represents Spanish Open Source developers and Users, has filed a complaint against Microsoft with the European Commision. 14 pages of grief cited Windows 8 as an "obstruction mechanism" calling EUFI Secure Boot a "de facto technological jail for computer booting systems ... making Microsoft's Windows platform less neutral than ever". on March 6 of 2012 the Commission fined Microsoft 561 million euros for failing to offer users a choice of web browser as well as a 2004 ruling which found M$ has abusted it's market position by tying Windows Media Player to Windows itself. Relations appear to remain more tense towards Windows in Europe so ther may be some hope of making EUFI more Linux friendly. EUFI has been implicated in the death of Samsung Laptops running Linux

Submission + - Android Trojan Used in APT Attacks (securityweek.com)

wiredmikey writes: Targeted attacks against Tibetan and Uyghur activists are nothing new, but attackers appear to be expanding their arsenal of attack tools to the Android platform. While attacks against the activists in the past have targeted both Windows and Mac OS X-based platforms, researchers from Kaspersky Lab have discovered an APT that successfully leverages Android to compromise targets.

According to Kaspersky researchers, a high profile Tibetan activist had his email account hacked on March 24th, 2013. Attackers used the hacked account to send spear phishing emails to the victim’s contact list that included a malicious Android Package (APK) attachment named “WUC’s Conference.apk”, which if installed, creates a malicious app called ‘Conference’ on the Android desktop.

If the victim launches the malicious app, the malware silently contacts a C&C server and starts to harvest data including includes contacts, call logs. SMS messages, geolocation and other phone data such as phone number, OS version, phone model, and SDK version.

While there have been previous indications that these types of attacks were in development, this attack is perhaps the first in a new wave of targeted attacks aimed at Android users, Kaspersky noted in a blog post. “So far, the attackers relied entirely on social engineering to infect the targets. History has shown us that, in time, these attacks will use zero-day vulnerabilities, exploits or a combination of techniques.”

Submission + - NVIDIA Launches Sub-$200 Graphics That Can Play Any DX11 Title, Even Crysis 3 (hothardware.com)

MojoKid writes: "To counter the just-announced AMD Radeon HD 7790, NVIDIA is launching a new mainstream graphics card of its own, which is somewhat of a cross between the GeForce GTX 650 Ti and GeForce GTX 660. The new GeForce GTX 650 Ti BOOST reference specifications call for a base GPU clock of 980MHz with a boost clock of 1033MHz and a memory clock of 1502MHz (6008MHz effective). At those frequencies, the GeForce GTX 650 Ti BOOST will offer up to 144.2GB/s of memory bandwidth and 62.7GTexes/s of textured fillrate. Performance-wise, the new card offers playable frame rates in virtually any leading-edge DX11 title on the market currently, for well under $200. NVIDIA is also doing some rejiggering of its price structure, which makes the company’s entire mid-range lineup more affordable."

Submission + - petition to require congressmen and senators to wear logos of sponsors (boingboing.net) 1

arnodf writes: Since most politicians' campaigns are largely funded by wealthy companies and individuals, it would give voters a better sense of who the candidate they are voting for is actually representing if the company's logo, or individual's name, was prominently displayed upon the candidate's clothing at all public appearances and campaign events. Once elected, the candidate would be required to continue to wear those "sponsor's" names during all official duties and visits to constituents. The size of a logo or name would vary with the size of a donation. For example, a $1 million dollar contribution would warrant a patch of about 4" by 8" on the chest, while a free meal from a lobbyist would be represented by a quarter-sized button. Individual donations under $1000 are exempt.

Link to we-the-people petition, 55000 signatures still needed.
