How is it that you're seeing ads on youtube? The only way I can think of is that you must be using the youtube app on phone/tablet. Any browser can easily block out all the ads. I literally haven't seen a youtube ad in over 5 years. Using Ublock Origin, Ghostery, Privacy Badger and Malwarebytes on Firefox. Presto!! All ads are gone. Just for good measure I have a pi-hole to block anything that might slip through.

Try it, you'll like it.

It's interesting that you think 'muh freedoms' and 'tough on crime' aren't real issues.
You also state 'a federal government that controls many state responsibilities, cannot be dismissed because it is wrong'. These state responsibilities are the ones outlined in the US constitution, and nothing more. The most important state responsibility is to protect its' citizens' rights and freedoms, and in many cases that requires being tough on crime.

However, pointing out your socialist tendencies doesn't in any way defend or condone what this guy thinks, or what he had planned.

Here is one thing we can do about it. Use a FRAND model (Free, Reasonable and Non Discriminatory).
These sites are free to host whomever they want, and to allow or not allow comments.... HOWEVER, the clearly posted guidelines/ToCs (required) MUST be applied equally, regardless of who says what. This way they have the ability to moderate as they see fit, but it applies to everyone the same: fail that and face fines/regulations or some other remedy.

If you claim to be a site that allows anyone to voice their opinions(within the clearly posted guidelines), then you must behave that way.

Operate as you claim, or face some sort of punishment.

This will be fair to everyone, which I hope is what most people want.

If you want to be a left/right wing site only, that's fine, but it MUST be clearly posted. This isn't my preferred way of doing things, but it's so much better than unpersoning someone you don't like, because it won't always be only one way. We are not a society that was founded on silencing people you don't agree with.

Personally I don't believe any of this shit, but it really doesn't add up.

I think this button/touchscreen issue is manufacturer dependant.
My family drives two Dodge vehicles (RAM/Durango, 2018 models) with 8.4" infotainment touch screens.. however;

1) there is a knob for fan speed
2) there is a switch for temp. up/down for each side (driver / passenger)
3) there is an off/on button
4) all radio controls are steering wheel mounted (buttons)
5) seat/steering wheel warmers are button controlled

All climate and entertainment controls have tactile knobs and switches and can be controlled without ever taking your eyes off the road. The one exception is that choosing the vent your air comes from is on the touchscreen, but that control is not regularly used.

But, if I want, I can also use the touchscreen.

I agree that if controls were only on the touchscreen, it may be an issue, but you can always pick a manufacturer that does both.

Sacramento has a population of about 500,000 and there are 193,000 welfare recipients? So over 38% of the population is on welfare? Please tell me that this is not correct. If true, I think there are bigger issues than welfare fraud.

Comment Regulation won't help (Score 2) 322

The problem, as I see it, is not regulation, as that certainly is doable, it's how to prevent bad actors from advancing the technology, and thus getting the upper hand.

We can regulate our (and by our, I mean the western world) industries till the cows come home, but until we find a way to regulate the world, there is nothing stopping China, Russia, Iran, and even our own western military-industrial complexing from developing, in secret, a dystopian future.

Sadly, I don't have an answer for this, and the closest I can come is making sure that the west is ahead of the pack. Not a great answer, but at least it would be a little comfort knowing that the good (allegedly) guys have the biggest gun.

Let me preface this by stating that I do believe in AGW, thus not a denier. HOWEVER, in my part of the world, southwestern BC, it was a warmer and drier winter than normal, therefore less natural gas used to heat my home. Even though it is hot now, and my A/C is on, electricity here is hydro-electric, so it's quite green.

Also, there was an article in the local paper talking about the warming, and what it means. It stated that we can now have a longer growing season, and can grow food not normally grown here (there is someone growing rice around here). Also, the article stated that this part of the world is one of the few places in the world that would see a net benefit from the warmer temps.

Having said that, why on earth should I work against myself, or care about the other side of the planet. I know it sounds selfish, and I do actually make every effort not to be wasteful, and to recycle where ever possible.

The bottom line is, I like what is happening where I live, and short of another country invading us, I don't see this as a bad thing.

Warmer winters = less fossil fuels used for heating
Longer summers = better and more diverse growing season.

It's all good, and the selfish part of me simply doesn't care about the rest of the planet. Yes it's a fluke, and I'm lucky to be here... but it is what it is.
