because forbidding all pollution is no different from just shutting down every chemical plant. Forbidding specific pollutants shuts down all processes which make them. And I, for one, kind of like having headphones under $150 each, cars under $200,000, and food for 10% to 50% the price it would have to be if packaged in wood, glass, and a limited range of paper or cardboard. I also like having a computer, using dish soap, and many, many other activities which rely on these toxin-producing chemical plants.

The first movie consisted entirely of a cudgel to beat over the head of America for how the native Americans were treated. It was predictable. The acting was bad. Overall it just sucked and most people who believe otherwise just like anything that agrees with their point of view regardless of real artistic value.

Submission + - Florida man accused of using AI to create child porn (cbsnews.com)

An anonymous reader writes: Detectives have arrested a Florida man for allegedly using artificial intelligence to create child pornography images of a young neighbor.

Investigators said Daniel Clark Warren, 51, took a photo of a young girl who lived in his neighborhood and then used AI to remove her clothes and put her in sexual situations.

"It's pretty scary when you look at this stuff. If you just looked at it briefly, you would think it's a real photograph," said Martin County Sheriff's Detective Brian Broughton. "He takes the face of a child and then he sexualizes that, removes the clothing and poses the child and engages them in certain sexual activity."

Warren was arrested in January on a tip. He's facing 14 felony child pornography counts and is in jail on a $1.5 million bond. Detectives are working to determine if there are any other related cases.

Nine US states currently have laws against the creation or sharing of non-consensual deepfake photography, which are synthetic images created to mimic one's likeness.

Submission + - FCC Lets SpaceX Expand Testing of Cellular Starlink for Phones (pcmag.com)

SonicSpike writes: The FCC has given SpaceX regulatory clearance to start expanding tests of its cellular Starlink system in the US.

The FCC today issued an experimental license to SpaceX to test cellular Starlink in 10 more US locations; that comes after it granted licenses for two dozen other locations in December.

Originally, the FCC only granted SpaceX permission to test the cellular Starlink system in select cities, such as Mountain View, California; Dallas, Texas; and Pie Town, New Mexico. But now the commission is letting the company test the technology “state-wide” in California, Washington, Texas, and Hawaii.

In addition, SpaceX can conduct testing in Cape Canaveral, Florida; Whitmore Lake, Michigan; and Rock Creek, Colorado, among other locations.

The company is indicating the tests will see how the cellular Starlink system fares across various kinds of terrains. In a filing to the FCC earlier this month, SpaceX said: “Including these additional locations will enable SpaceX to more fully test its direct-to-cellular system, including beam-placement and topology software, in a variety of different geographic circumstances.”

In the meantime, the company’s initial tests have shown that the cellular Starlink satellites can successfully beam internet data to unmodified smartphones on the ground. This includes powering download speeds up to 17Mbps and even sending the internet data while the phone is under tree cover or even indoors. The technology’s goal is to serve cellular dead zones, making it possible for consumers to receive satellite connectivity in remote and rural areas.

If all goes well the rate of involuntary employment will plummet. America has more than enough wealth to care for all technologically unemployed people. The only problems are doing it in a way that keeps people healthy and black hearted "I've got mine" types. Work for the sake of work is what we get any other way. Let's not have people doing unnecessary work. As someone or other said, for full employment just replace all the back hoes with spoons.

Are we pretending a few hundred space launches per year put a significant burden on the air traffic control systems of America? Or does it just sound better than "some arbitrary budget line so we can spend more on other things"? How about the FTC? Tax the space industry so we can supervise radio communication more. Or the National Park Service: tax the space industry so we can satisfy higher standards for safety in our parks. Treat me like I'm all grown up and know how a budget works.
