The only reason the US is not at war is because Iran decided not to go full on jihadi a month ago. If they killed any well known American general the US wouldn't hesitate to melt their sand. So in this case Iran backed down with a whimper and the US benefited from it. If that thing escalated the US would win but it wouldn't be cost free.

You seem to ignore the fact that consumers(you and me) wanted cheaper products, but expected to be paid a living wage(what ever that is). So, instead of supporting their fellow citizens that made their products at a living wage, they chose to purchase the cheaper products made in foreign nations. Yes, manufactures went there. But yes, consumers wanted the cheap products. To ignore both of these facts shows you being very biased and narrow minded.

"You seem to ignore the fact " Um, no I didn't. I just never mentioned it. No consumer wants to pay a higher price without any added benefit. That's like saying water is wet. Its so obvious it doesn't need to be said. How companies go about providing a good product and competing in a capitalist economy is the real trick. Either their profit margin is lower or their quality goes down by using cheaper product. In this case the production of the cheaper product was completed in a foreign country. It seems you are the one who ignored the facts and are being biased and narrow minded.

How much misdirection in your comment. It was American companies that got us in the situation. No one held US manufacturing hostage. US companies willingly went over there looking for cheaper labor and got it at the expense of the US. China took advantage of the situation like any country should and made it work in their favor despite the suffering of their own people. Now they are soon to be equal to the US in many ways and are no longer accepting the disrespect. Trump and his daughter did as much as they could in China to avoid paying for US labor. Just keep on posting this fake patriotism. I am sure someone will rally round the flag.

Well sports are on tv every day and the thousands of scientists doing wonderful research in various fields who don't have anything new to report are not. Not sure whose fault it is that people recognize someone they see every day vs someone whom they've never seen or heard of. Blame America or sports or the remote control. Whatever.

Submission + - Russian 'Sovereign Internet' Law Gives Government Sweeping Power Over Internet (npr.org) 1

An anonymous reader writes: A Russian law has taken effect that, in theory, would allow the Russian government to cut off the country's Internet from the rest of the world. The "sovereign Internet law," as the government calls it, greatly enhances the Kremlin's control over the Web. It was passed earlier this year and allows Russia's government to cut off the Internet completely or from traffic outside Russia "in an emergency," as the BBC reported. But some of the applications could be more subtle, like the ability to block a single post.

It requires Internet service providers to install software that can "track, filter, and reroute internet traffic," as Human Rights Watch stated. Such technology allows the state telecommunications watchdog "to independently and extrajudicially block access to content that the government deems a threat." The equipment would conduct what's known as "deep packet inspection," an advanced way to filter network traffic. Such widespread control is alarming to human rights groups, which fear it could be used to silence dissent. The Russian government has justified the law by saying it is needed to prevent U.S. cyberattacks. And, as the BBC reported, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov has rejected the idea the law could be used to cut off Russia from the rest of the world: "No-one is suggesting cutting the Internet."

Bad news for competitors ... if Microsoft pick a replacement with the vision and ruthlessness of an older, wiser Steve Jobs. Even half a Jobs would turn Microsoft around from the stagnating business it has become.

Easy shoes to fill, because even Goofy could have done as well.

I am guessing you thought Bill Gates didn't do too well during his tenure. I am not so sure Steve Jobs would have agreed.

Word from inside the company is that Sinofsky made the devs "p4 obliterate" the Start menu code, meaning not only did they delete it but they wiped the entire history of the code from their source control. If true, it would mean that they couldn't just "bring back" the start menu, they'd have to entirely rewrite it.

They wouldn't have to rewrite it. That's silly. They would just go back to a version of the code when it existed. Microsoft doesn't have one flat file with their code in it. There are literally hundreds of versions that exist with different source branches etc.
