Not in the USA anyway. The current educational system is too flawed for this to be even a viable option. Not everyone is cut out to learn this type of skill. Should car mechanics be a required class too? I'm a programmer and car mechanics are a whole different beast that I can't wrap my mind around. I'd image those who are skilled mechanics can share the same sentiment about programming.

My son's school has both electives and that's where programming should remain.
