Comment Re:Why use MUL/DIV (Score 1) 407

Any newer computer is going to consume at least two or three times as much juice and be a lot louder.

I turned my Asus EEE into a [bittorrent] "Seed Box" and file server by removing and selling the:

  • Screen.
  • Keyboard
  • Battery
  • Wi-fi

This box then has:

  • A 630 MHZ Intel Celery
  • 512MB of RAM
  • A 4GB solid state, with the option to add SDHC

Net price after parting was $100. It uses 12 watts. Bitch :-)

I don't agree, but I have to admit I might not have a good opinion as I've only seen a little of the show.

Watching Big Bang makes me cringe. It seems like the nerd/blonde stereotypes would work well for a 30 second family guy joke, but I can't stand to watch it for a whole show. And, from what I saw, it seemed like they were just throwing in scientific-sounding words. The majority of the show seemed to be based on the nerd stereotype, not jokes based on science.

But, to each his own. I've never really liked sitcoms very much anyway so I'm definitely biased.

While I agree that this is odd with games, I definitely see the potential for 3d animators. It takes my home computers (note the plural) hours/days to render complex scenes, depending on the length of the scene. The advantage in computing power would greatly outweigh the bandwidth cost here, especially if you could just upload the job and wait for the result (instead of sending each frame to be rendered).

But I would imagine it would not take many people to bog this down.

Yeah my 7900 GT still plays newer games (like HL2, Ep. 2 and Left 4 Dead) at nearly full settings (usually just not full AA) at native resolution. It's not the best gaming rig ever, but my temperatures stay low, my case has room (the 7900 GT is a single slot design), I get an engrossing environment, and my framerates stay far above 30 FPS. I'd most likely have to get a new power supply if I wanted a current top of the line GPU, let alone a whole new computer.

Not only is it $199 for the glasses, but you also need the following (according to NVIDIA's product page):

  1. Vista (wtf, no XP?)
  2. A (nvidia approved) 120HZ monitor. Currently there are 2 out there. And they are both only 22" and don't go to 1920x1200, so no 1080P content even though you're paying $400+ for the monitor.
  3. An NVIDIA 8800 GT or up. Only works w/ NVIDIA GPUs.
  4. Doesn't work with 3-way SLI (for now at least), something that people able to sink this kind of money might have.
