Comment My favorite : Mamiya 645 (Score 1) 316

It takes amazingly good B&W shots. I've rarely seen equivalent quality for pictures. OTOH when I carry it around I get a neckache in two hours ; the lenses are huge and metal-mounted... So I recently bought a Pentax K5ii, a good camera when you wqnt to tweak the settings and the fixed focal lenses are correct. I just miss the lab part, for which I have not enough time any more...

Submission + - The blue honey mystery is solved in France (independent.co.uk)

nicomede writes: A mysteriously blue honey has been collected for a few weeks in bee colonies in eastern France. After investigation, it appears that the culprit is a nearby biogas plant that processed residues from a Mars company factory in Strasbourg. Measures were taken not to stock this waste in an area were bees could reach it, that apparently solved the problem.

I currently use my PI as an automatic garden watering system (using a relay and an electrovalve). The good thing is that I can remotely change the watering time by ssh to adapt to the weather (I live far from that house). Running for 3 months without a glitch so far, which shows a MTBF higher than 1000 hours. By the way, it was really fun to program in Python.

I beg to differ on that, it has been available since January 2012 (at least in France) and several thousands of them are already on the road., see here : http://www.peugeot.fr/configurer/3008/hybrid/ Additional cars with this system are also available (the DS5 for one). I was lucky enough to work on this project, a real engineering challenge, especially to ensure that the front and the rear axle work together nicely. And the car is really fun to drive. Given the complexity of the design of such a car, I wish good luck to the guys trying to do this at home.

Comment What about the positionning precision? (Score 1) 224

As an engineer I am truly impressed by the clever material breakthrough. However, I can't imagine how they can manage the mechanical precision on the positionning on the read/write locations of the HDD. Having a 1 nm wide bit size is not helpful if you are not in the same range for the relative head/disk position? Or I am missing something?

Comment Ealry 20th century French SF : JH Rosny Aine (Score 2) 1244

Several of the best early SF stories I've read are from the French author JH Rosny Aine. Some are now available in English : http://sfscope.com/2012/02/wesleyan-bringing-jh-rosny-ain.html The narrative and topics are amazingly modern for a book almost one century old. This books features several stories : -The Death of the Earth : an apocalyptic last-man story in a agonizing Earth -"The Xipehuz" is a prehistoric tale in which the human species battles strange geometric alien life forms. Definitely wirth a try.
