What is going to be different about this software layer?

Is it going to be written in some new magical language that prevents programmers from fucking up and having buffer overflow/underflow or other common problems that you see in C and C++, the most likely languages that this kind of software would be written in?

Just today there was an article on ./ about BIOS infections. Isn't the BIOS a layer between the OS and "silicon". Sure, the BIOS wasn't written to be a security layer but just because a software layer is below the OS doesn't mean that is is immune to being exploited.

Besides all of the obvious reasons that this is just another gimmick by McAfee to get more $$ from corporate IT departments with MBA directors that don't even know what the "silicon" in the marketing press release, sorry "article" means, when this gets exploited and there are viri for this layer I bet McAfee will have a AV for this layer to sell.

The term came about because a bug was stuck in one of the early computers and someone had to 'debug' the computer to get it to work. I believe it was a British woman who coined the term. I dont remember her name right now, but she was a pioneer of computer engineering if I recall correctly.

HTML5 is attempting to fix that issue with the canvas element and web workers (i know its a stupid name) . You still need JavaScript but not Flash, and Google has been optimizing Chrome for JavaScript because they already knew the browser as a platform is the future.

A lot of the content and interactiveness coded in Flash can now be done in HTML5 which should be more efficient. Look at the Chrome store, there are very infantile implementations of HTML5 apps available now, and HTML5 isn't going to be ratified until 2014 or something like that. I hate Flash and JavaScript as much as the next guy but I don't think Flash and JavaScript sucking are reasons not to take the browser seriously as a platform.

I'm glad you brought this up. My original post was going to mention that at 15 I had access to almost anything I wanted to get my hands on. However, I (in my own opinion of course) am a productive member of society.

How did this happen? My parents thought me that drinking too much is bad, smoking too much is going to get me cancer, driving drunk is going to get me killed ect... So, when presented with drugs and alcohol I knew moderation and control. When all my friends were puking their guts out because they had no experience drinking, I was enjoying myself responsibly.

However, when you have 200,000+ POS machines, management wants an AV.
I hate McAfee, I hate using a AV instead of isolating a machine from removable media and the Internet. I hate spending money on AV when we could use it on something else. But when a franchise manager on the other side of the world lets one of his employees use the wifi or a printer or something, I'm glad there's an AV to protect my ass. Even though there shouldn't be a way the POS machines get a virus, the AV is kind of like car insurance: It protects you from accidents, costs too much money per year, someone else forced you to get it, and in the end when something shitty happens it kind of saves your ass.

Just because it can run flash doesn't mean it should run flash. Or java for that matter. Also, how much RAM is in it? I'm assuming that in the PDF they mean storage when they say memory. Is there a gpu? If not, do you want to waste all of your battery life having your cpu process that flash video? Completely off topic: but where is Wireless USB? Aren't tablets a perfect platform for using wireless usb?

While I think all 3 of you are accurate in predicting the typical user response, I still think a message clearly indicating what is wrong is still a lot better than a BSOD. There will always be users who disregard system messages, but I believe a warning message will educate more users than a BSOD.
