Under the covers, the latest version of the Gecko engine, 1.9.1.5 speeds up rendering, as does background IMAP folder synchronization. Search has been enhanced, too, with a timeline and refinement filters. PCMag.com has a full review andslideshow of the new Thunderbird 3.

Submission + - DavMail 3.6.1 released (sourceforge.net)

SF:mguessan writes: Ever wanted to get rid of Outlook ? DavMail is a POP/IMAP/SMTP/Caldav/LDAP exchange gateway allowing users to use any mail/calendar client (e.g. Thunderbird with Lightning or Apple iCal) with an Exchange server, even from the internet or behind a firewall through Outlook Web Access. DavMail now includes an LDAP gateway to Exchange global address book to allow recipient address completion in mail compoze window and full calendar support with attendees free/busy display. The main goal of DavMail is to provide standard compliant protocols in front of proprietary Exchange. This means LDAP for address book, SMTP to send messages, IMAP to browse messages on the server in any folder, POP to retrieve inbox messages only and Caldav for calendar support. Thus any standard compliant client can be used with Microsoft Exchange. DavMail gateway is implemented in java and should run on any platform. Releases are tested on Windows, Linux (Ubuntu) and Mac OSX. Tested successfully with the Iphone (gateway running on a server). This is a bugfix release with fixed regressions from 3.6.0 and a few enhancements from user feedback. Role Playing (Games)

Submission + - R.I.P.: Dungeons & Dragons Co-creator Dave Arn (scifiwire.com) 1

Dave Knott writes: "Dave Arneson, one of the co-creators of the Dungeons and Dragons role-playing game passed away on Tuesday at the age of 61 after a long struggle with cancer. Arneson, along with Gary Gygax, drafted the original rules for D&D and, after failing to get any interest from mainstream publishers, formed Tactical Studies Rules (better known as TSR), jump-starting the role-playing games genre and publishing industry. Arneson left TSR in 1979 under the cloud of a lawsuit, the full details of which were never disclosed. He also founded the still active computer games company 4D Interactive, and spent much of the latter part of his life teaching role-playing game design."

Kolargol00 writes: Browsing the iTunes Music Store was only possible with the iTunes desktop application. Thus limiting its platform support to MS Windows and MacOS X. Now with Nikhil's Google App Engine powered App Store one can browse the iTunes store as a website without having to install iTunes. He managed to successfully decode the complex XML format of iTunes and render it as regular HTML pages in real time.
