We went through Islam, Christianity, Judaism, and Hinduism. In 4th Grade. It took about six weeks if memory serves. I remember hating it, I wanted to get back to history and politics, those were my areas of strength in social studies, but I got through it and hated it less than algebra, lol.

We didn't do the rest. I'm not really sure who determined what would be covered. It is reasonable to say at a certain point something is probably too niche to require a deep dive in primary education. By number of global followers you could argue that Judaism shouldn't have been included, Buddhism commands 20 to 30 times as many followers, but I grew up in New York and there are a lot of Jews there, so, yeah, it made sense to include it. Judaism is also foundational for a proper study of Christianity and Islam, both of which have followers in the billions, and nobody would suggest not covering those.

Out of curiosity, what exactly did study of "Christianity" entail? I'm an atheist so you may take everything I say or ask with a grain of salt, but to my mind American Christianity has a broad band of insanity running through it. Christianity in Eurasia had its fun over nearly 2000 years, splitting off from Judaism into Islam, Roman Catholicism, Orthodox Catholicism, Anglican Catholicism, and the various Dissenter churches, but you Yanks have come up with weirdness like Mormonism and Prosperity Evangelicalism in an amazingly short time. We now have American TV pastors declaring that Donald Trump, an obvious con artist with no morals, is in fact the second coming of Christ. How is all this presented in a neutral, objective classroom setting for study?

meat is incredibly resource-intensive to produce, only 10% of the caloric value in the animal feed ends up in the meat.

That's not a great argument against meat. You might as well just say that sugar is much more efficient in providing calories. It is, but meat is a hell of a lot healthier.

Submission + - Age of Universe Nearly Twice As Old As Previously Believed (phys.org)

An anonymous reader writes: Our universe could be twice as old as current estimates, according to a new study that challenges the dominant cosmological model and sheds new light on the so-called "impossible early galaxy problem." "Our newly-devised model stretches the galaxy formation time by a several billion years, making the universe 26.7 billion years old, and not 13.7 as previously estimated," says author Rajendra Gupta, adjunct professor of physics in the Faculty of Science at the University of Ottawa.

For years, astronomers and physicists have calculated the age of our universe by measuring the time elapsed since the Big Bang and by studying the oldest stars based on the redshift of light coming from distant galaxies. In 2021, thanks to new techniques and advances in technology, the age of our universe was thus estimated at 13.797 billion years using the Lambda-CDM concordance model. However, many scientists have been puzzled by the existence of stars like the Methuselah that appear to be older than the estimated age of our universe and by the discovery of early galaxies in an advanced state of evolution made possible by the James Webb Space Telescope. These galaxies, existing a mere 300 million years or so after the Big Bang, appear to have a level of maturity and mass typically associated with billions of years of cosmic evolution. Furthermore, they're surprisingly small in size, adding another layer of mystery to the equation.

Zwicky's tired light theory proposes that the redshift of light from distant galaxies is due to the gradual loss of energy by photons over vast cosmic distances. However, it was seen to conflict with observations. Yet Gupta found that "by allowing this theory to coexist with the expanding universe, it becomes possible to reinterpret the redshift as a hybrid phenomenon, rather than purely due to expansion." In addition to Zwicky's tired light theory, Gupta introduces the idea of evolving "coupling constants," as hypothesized by Paul Dirac. Coupling constants are fundamental physical constants that govern the interactions between particles. According to Dirac, these constants might have varied over time. By allowing them to evolve, the timeframe for the formation of early galaxies observed by the Webb telescope at high redshifts can be extended from a few hundred million years to several billion years. This provides a more feasible explanation for the advanced level of development and mass observed in these ancient galaxies.

Surprise: Putin isn't what you think

Putin is exactly what we think. He is a dictator who wants to expand his borders to natural chokepoints, necessitating the annexation of Ukraine, Moldova, Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, and parts of Romania. People who think it is is resurgent nationalism, a wounded sense of pride, longing for past greatness, etc. completely miss the point. Putin knows climate change will cause massive political and social upheaval, and associated mass migrations, and he wants to secure Russia's borders by conquering other nations.

How exactly is the criticism both stringent and bereft of strong data points? I'm going to assume the writer meant to use the word strident, given that the article is peppered with other words to cast doubt on the ECB report, like saying they "allege" rather than state, that they "appear fuelled by irrational and emotionally-driven bias", their views are "shaped by misconceptions". In other words, the ECB is wrong, and bitcoin is completely not a fucking ponzi scheme that should be outright banned.
