Comment Re:Starship will change access to space. (Score 3, Insightful) 35

Dude... do you not remember the state of space launch business before SpaceX? It wasn't that long ago, it was dismal. Of course he didn't single handedly do a job of thousands of engineers, but he did push through ideas and ways of working that would have never flown in space industry before SpaceX. And it's those ideas and changes that differentiate SpaceX from rest of industry and make it the massive success that it is. 61 successful launches, no failures just last year, that's better than most launchers achieve in decades. You would have to be delusional to downplay that.

It's not going to work. That being said, it's great that space launch is accessible enough that even whacky, doomed to fail ideas can be tested. Because if spaceflight has to be a sure thing and failure is unaffordable, then not only scammy laughing stocks will be excluded, but also genuine advancements will be retarded from getting flight proven and advancing technological frontiers.

This is tempered glass types of pressure, so if you can get it in a glass fiber form, it's possible that you can make it maintain its own pressure. But the real breakthrough would be to understand what exactly controls such complex superconductivity, when its understood completely maybe it's not so tricky at all to make ambient condition usable superconductors. There are lots of open questions to how superconductivity really works, solving those will give new insights.

Very easily. Accuracy is no problem at all, at the end of the day, there is still a human checking the work over before it's done. Most jobs involve a lot of fluff and boilerplate that isn't really novel work or add anything substantial, but it still needs to be done and it still costs money. That's what ChatGPT and the likes automate away. So it's a great efficiency improvement, let the machine do the monkey work and focus on what actually matters.

Cheap enough, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/...

Here these delivery bots bring the groceries somewhere between free* and 0.99€ (* free means the store pays the delivery company and just includes it as cost of doing business).

There are a few delivery only stores, the savings on rent and upkeep are more than enough to pay for the bot. The only gripe I have with them is that they don't really have enough bots and enough contracts with shops/restos/etc. The human delivery companies are way ahead of them on scale.

Sooner or later it'll come out for real who dun it, as factual evidence, not some conspiracy nutters wishful thinking. You don't do shit like that unless you think its not going to bite you even if everybody knows you did it. Russians or Germans themselves were the only ones in that position. Any other western country doing it - that would have been the height of stupidity.

I dunno man, I'm pretty shit at artsy stuff, can't get a color palette right, forget about designing something that looks visually pleasing. Starting from visual reference and doing the engineering to turn it into reality is pretty straightforward matter in comparison. Generating bunch of visual references at will and having most of them actually look good is pretty powerful starting point for most product designs. I think in years ahead we'll start seeing lots of products that begun as AI generated pics.

Already today you can see a very clear 3D CAD aesthetic in products that is distinctly separate from earlier product designs that were done without computers. I think decade from now we'll have another very clear product design aesthetic, things that are visibly AI designed. And these AI product designs will look good, bringing what are currently premium aesthetics or better to even cheap products.
