Submission + - School shooting; annouced in youtube

nyri writes: There was a school shooting in Finland a few hours ago. This time the killer annouced his intentions on youtube before the killings. This is a strange world. Here is a clip from his rationale

I am prepared to fight and die for my cause. I, as a natural selector, will eliminate all who I see unfit, disgraces of human race and failures of natural selection.
You might ask yourselves, why did I do this and what do I want. Well, most of you are too arrogant and closed-minded to understand... You will proprably say me that I am"insane", "crazy", "psychopath", "criminal" or crap like that. No, the truth is that I am just an animl, a human, an individual, a dissident.
What an asshole.

Submission + - RUMOR: refusal to develop for PS3

Adam McAllister writes: "posted on [Nov 3, 2007 1:21 am GMT]. A person known only as -D3MO- stated he was talking to a close friend of his who works for a major third party publisher who complain that "teh cell" is too hard to develop for.

He/She/It includes "The company has spent thousands of dollars on sending these programmers to conventions and trying to get them to learn how to utilize the Cell Microprocessor, but many are just giving up."

They go on to say "Reason for developers not wanting to develop for the PS3 is that, the knowledge does not apply anywhere else. Unless the Cell architecture becomes standard, all that knowledge will be wasted."

basically- Sony is teaching all these developers to use the Cell to the full extent it can go- but unless the PS3 takes of or the Cell is used in other things all the time they spent learning how to develop for it will be useless.

Submission + - Where do you buy your "nerd" gear? 2

JCSoRocks writes: I've spent the last 9 years living about 5 minutes from a Fry's Electronics. Apparently, I was spoiled. I recently moved and made the mistake of going to Staples just to pick up some canned air and a network cable. I'm no stranger to online shopping (I just ordered my new machine from NewEgg and built it a few months ago) but sometimes you need something NOW! Between that Staples experience and the brutal Best Buy post from yesterday, http://yro.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=07/10/29/1833227, I'm left wondering — where the heck do you buy tech stuff anymore?
Microsoft

Submission + - Microsoft to leaves .net apps out in the cold

An anonymous reader writes: Many people have heard of Microsoft's new "Server Core", a stripped down 'lean and mean' install of the new Server 2008 platform. However, few seem to realize that with this edition of the operating system, Microsoft seems to be pulling the rug out from under everyone who uses the .NET Framework. There will be no .NET Framework or Runtime components available for Server Core! That's right, the great and grand .NET platform which Microsoft has touted so heavily for its flexibility, power and security is being left out. Whats better, is that this seems to be as a result of .NET's runtime reliance on Explorer and its inability to be modularized. All those people developing next-gen web services, servers and tools in .NET seem to have been left out in the cold.

http://blogs.technet.com/server_core/archive/2007/06/26/iis-in-server-core.aspx — > IIS included in Server Core — Managed Code and ASP.NET left out

Even Microsoft's own new tools, such as Powershell, won't work as a result. This seems like a confusing move, considering the weight MS has previously thrown behind .NET. It seems funny that Mono can bring .NET to unix, but Microsoft can't seem to bring .NET to windows.

Submission + - Hurricane predictions way off for 2nd year (fsu.edu)

Talen317 writes: For the second year in a row forcasters have failed to predict the hurricane activity for the season.
In fact acording to NOAA's claims, there was only a 5% chance that this year would be a below-normal season.
Florida State University COAP reports that 2007 may be one of the least active hurricane seasons in the last 30 years!

If we can't trust the predictions for the next 5 months how can we be sure about the predictions for the next 50 years?

From NOAA: (http://www.cpc.noaa.gov/products/outlooks/hurricane.shtml)
"NOAA is predicting a very high likelihood (85% chance) of an above-normal 2007 Atlantic hurricane season, a 10% chance of a near-normal season, and only a 5% chance of a below-normal season, according to a consensus of scientists at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Climate Prediction Center, National Hurricane Center, Hurricane Research Division, and Hydrometeorological Prediction Center."

From Florida State University, Center for Ocean-Atmospheric Prediction Studies (http://www.coaps.fsu.edu/~maue/tropical)
"Unless a dramatic and perhaps historical flurry of activity occurs in the next 9 weeks, 2007 will rank as a historically inactive TC year for the Northern Hemisphere as a whole. During the past 30 years, only 1977, 1981, and 1983 have had less activity to date (January-TODAY, Accumulated Cyclone Energy)."

Submission + - Bill to Restore Checks on Federal Goverment (jbs.org)

Anonymous writes: "American Freedom Agenda Act of 2007 (H.R. 3835) Introduced
Congressman Ron Paul introduced The American Freedom Agenda Act which would allow Guantanamo detainees to petition for a writ of habeas corpus under section 2241 of title 28, United States Code, it would bar presidential signing statements, bar evidence obtained from torture be used as evidence, protect journalists critical of the federal government, and restore checks and balances to the government."

Submission + - EU Demands Europe-wide Censorship of Underage Porn 2

Brian Ribbon writes: "Radio Netherlands is reporting that the EU is planning to force all of its members to criminalise the viewing of child pornography on the internet. While many people will consider this to be a necessary measure to protect the children, it fails to consider the fact that the downloading of material — without payment — does not encourage those who produce such material, rather it simply offends the public. The production of child pornography is currently the only crime which can't be observed; even watching a video of a murder is legal, yet the EU are demanding even stricter forms of censorship of sexual material. Is such censorship justified, or is it a symptom of a moral panic?"
It's funny. Laugh.

Submission + - James Randi's Prize Remains Unclaimed. Again... (gizmodo.com)

glavenoid writes: As you may remember, earlier this month James Randi offered up his $1,000,000 JREF prize to Pear Audio if they could prove their $7,250 speaker cable offered better sound quality than less expensive Monster brand Cables. After initially calling Randi's offer a hoax, Pear CEO Adam Blake decided to let double-blind testing proceed per equitable terms. However, Pear Audio has now withdrawn from the test.

Submission + - Thought crimes as homegrown terrorism (roguegovernment.com)

An anonymous reader writes: http://www.roguegovernment.com/news.php?id=4682 The U.S. House of Representatives recently passed HR 1955 titled the Violent Radicalization and Homegrown Terrorism Prevention Act of 2007. This bill is one of the most blatant attacks against the Constitution yet and actually defines thought crimes as homegrown terrorism. If passed into law, it will also establish a commission and a Center of Excellence to study and defeat so called thought criminals. Unlike previous anti-terror legislation, this bill specifically targets the civilian population of the United States and uses vague language to define homegrown terrorism. `(3) The Internet has aided in facilitating violent radicalization, ideologically based violence, and the homegrown terrorism process in the United States by providing access to broad and constant streams of terrorist-related propaganda to United States citizens.

Submission + - Sam Adams vs Sam Adams 2

peacefinder writes: "Sam Adams recently announced he's running for Mayor of Portland, Oregon. A few of his fans registered a couple of websites on his behalf. The brewer of Samuel Adams beer noticed these new domains, and sent the registrants a Cease-and-Desist Letter claiming trademark infringement. Local bloggers are calling for a boycott of the beer, while another claims that — if there exists real confusion — Boston Brewing may be violating Oregon election law by continuing to sell its beer here. Can the Portland Beer Party be far behind?"

Submission + - Verizon Wireless Admits to Deceptive Marketing

putch writes: The New York Attorney General, Andrew Cuomo, has just announced a $1 million settlement with Verizon Wireless. The issue at hand was Verizon's marketing of their BroadbandAccess and NationalAccess wireless internet service as "unlimited." According to the press release: "from 2004 until April of this year, Verizon Wireless terminated over 13,000 consumers nationwide for "excessive" use of its "unlimited" internet access plans." Verizon will also reimburse consumers for the cost of equipment purchased by those who had their accounts terminated.

Submission + - Java 6 and Leopard 3

nyri writes: "As a professional Java coder and consultant, I switched to OS X two years ago. I felt that my Java stuff works on it. After release on Java 6, I have felt otherwise: there is no OS X release. I assumed that Leopard would have Java 6 but I haven't seen a trace of it. I am seriously considering moving back to Windows (Linux, alas, is not an option for me in my corporate enviroment).
Has Apple, for some reason, decided that Java support does not pay off? Is this just a delay or has Apple decided to abandon Java support for good? Maybe you fellow slashdotters can give some answers to these questions.
All in all, other Java coders out there, how long are willing to put up with this kind of blatant ignorance of your needs? Or, do you have some nice technical solutions to this, which I am not-so-blissfully ignorant about?"
