The actess who portrayed Spock's potential mate T'Pring passed away Tuesday. According to the BBC and others the cause was complications from a heart attack. Leonard Nimoy took the time to tweet "Saying goodbye to T'Pring, Arlene Martel. A lovely talent." I'm sure there are many here who will also be saddened as she was most probably in our first fantasies of interspecies mating.

Bruce really seems to have a hangup over who posts what. Technocrat, which under different leadership to Slashdot could have become a real competitor for news from nerds for nerds, is again hung up by it's stance against anonymous postings. Bruce, you are screwing the pooch once again! Just why is it you are so against free speech?

Technocrat.net is planning on going live today! According to the site:
" The software is ready to run, with basic features. No moderation yet.
On Tuesday morning I will deploy the software on my server and do a little testing. After that, probably around mid-day California time, we will have a low-user-id land-rush, we'll put the site on the air with rather shaky software and we will start soliciting for volunteer editors.
Thus, Tuesday will be a live test and there will probably be a lot of issues in the software. Please keep your expectations low until I can work through them. "
What other Slashdot's alternatives are in the planning as the result of beta?

I'm sure most of you have checked it out, and am just as sure most of you don't like what they are plan to force upon us. So my question is, where do you plan on getting your Slashdot fix once the beta becomes the default? I know I'm trying to learn CSS so I can undo the damage they are inflicting.

This BBC article provides details of the script the United Kingdom's Queen was to deliver in the event of a nuclear holocaust. The document, released by the government under the 30-year rule, was drawn up as part of a war-gaming exercise in the spring of 1983, working through potential scenarios. In it, the Queen was expected to urge the people of the United Kingdom to "pray" in the event of a nuclear war. Although it was only a simulation, the text of the Queen's address — written as if broadcast at midday on Friday 4 March 1983 — seeks to prepare the country for the ordeal of World War III.
The script reads: "Now this madness of war is once more spreading through the world and our brave country must again prepare itself to survive against great odds. I have never forgotten the sorrow and the pride I felt as my sister and I huddled around the nursery wireless set listening to my father's inspiring words on that fateful day in 1939. Not for a single moment did I imagine that this solemn and awful duty would one day fall to me. But whatever terrors lie in wait for us all, the qualities that have helped to keep our freedom intact twice already during this sad century will once more be our strength."

The BBC reports:
A meteor crashing in central Russia's Ural mountains has injured at least 500 people, as the shockwave blew out windows and rocked buildings.
Scientists have played down suggestions that there is any link between the event in the Urals and 2012 DA14, an asteroid expected to race past the Earth on Friday at a distance of just 27,700km (17,200 miles) — the closest ever predicted for an object of that size.
Prof Alan Fitzsimmons, of the Astrophysics Research Centre at Queen's University Belfast, said there was "almost definitely" no connection.
"One reason is that 2012 DA14 is approaching Earth from the south, and this object hit in the northern hemisphere," he told BBC News.
"This is literally a cosmic coincidence, although a spectacular one."
