Yeah, yeah, I bet this guy is 1337, uses ONLY notepad / ed, hand writes his make files, and is the most badass coder on the entire planet. The problem is - nobody cares. Everyone else is more concerned with getting the job done efficiently

Yeah i used to think that way, i wrote the software application of my thesis using only a text editor with syntax hilighting(editplus, nice btw) and believe me, it was a pain in the ass, i had to check regularly the java api so i could remember the parameters and name of some method, this without counting the happy time i spend coding swing layouts at hand.
Now i just matured and never again will do this again, the good site of ald of this is that i learned a lot about the idiosincracies of swing, java and ant as a build tool.

Submission + - Scientific Study: Brits are terrible at washing their Hands (bbc.co.uk)

An anonymous reader writes: The BBC reports the finding of a scientific study on the washing of hands in the UK. The result? 'Faecal bacteria are present on 26% of hands in the UK, 14% of banknotes and 10% of credit cards. 11% of hands are so 'grossly contaminated' they are carrying as many germs as a dirty toilet bowl. It's the same for 8% of cards and 6% of notes. Faecal matter can be found on one in six mobile phones. 99% of people interviewed at motorway service stations toilets claimed they had washed their hands after going to the toilet. Electronic recording devices revealed only 32% of men and 64% of women actually did wash their hands.

Submission + - Lands End trademarks f(x)

An anonymous reader writes: I got a new Lands End catalog in the mail today, and was surprised to find that the function notation f(x) was listed as f(x)^tm throughout their catalog. Can they really trademark that?

All that comes packaged in a laptop that’s just 0.8-inches thick, weighs 1.1Kg, and boots in under 10 seconds.

Submission + - Lots of man-in-the-middle vulnerabilities (google.com) 1

An anonymous reader writes: In a recent study researchers from Stanford and U.T.Austin discovered that many popular applications break or disable certificate validation when using HTTPS. As a result their HTTPS connections are not properly authenticated making them vulnerable to man-in-the-middle attacks. Their FAQ gives a brief overview of the issue.

Submission + - Google threatens French media ban (bbc.co.uk)

another random user writes: Google has threatened to exclude French media sites from search results if France goes ahead with plans to make search engines to pay for content.

In a letter sent to several ministerial offices, Google said such a law "would threaten its very existence".

French newspaper publishers have been pushing for the law, saying it is unfair that Google receives advertising revenue from searches for news. French Culture Minister Aurelie Filippetti also favours the idea. She told a parliamentary commission it was "a tool that it seems important to me to develop".

Submission + - Pause in global warming has now lasted 16 years 1

phlinn writes: Despite some localized excessively hot summer days this year, global average temperatures appear to still be stalled since 1997 according to data recently released by the UK met office. Phil Jones, who previously said 15 years would worry him, continues to predict significant warming by the end of the decade, and now won't worry until 20 years have passed.

Submission + - SD card survives real-life disaster test (stuff.co.nz)

An anonymous reader writes: A newly-wed couple lost their digital camera and SD card in the Christchurch earthquake in February 2011. The SD card survived flooding with silt and exposure to the weather for 20 months embedded in a gravel driveway. Amazingly, all 2.5 Gb of photos have recently been recovered. Sadly the digital camera did not fare so well. Even more interesting is that the SD card was from by a budget supplier, kudos to Adata!

Submission + - Deanonymizing You: I know who you are after 1 click online or a mobile call (networkworld.com)

concealment writes: "Matching a user's mobility trace to their identity "can provide information about habits, interests and activities—or anomalies to them—which in turn may be exploited for illicit gain via theft, blackmail, or even physical violence," stated the research. It's worth a read to see how the researchers used Wi-Fi hotspots on a university campus, captured chats via instant messengers, as well as Bluetooth connectivity to show inter-user correlations. In these social network side channel attacks, they were able to strip out privacy and deanonymize users via their mobility traces with an accuracy of 80%. And this flyer claimed that the "proposed algorithms to quantify information released in location traces, using social networks as a side-channel, are within 90% of the optimal.""

Submission + - Ask Slashdot: Good, yet uncommon, gift for a friend?

An anonymous reader writes: I, having the title of alpha geek in my classroom (15 yo), was asked by a female friend of mine whether "buying" a star for someone was legit. (It is for a friend of her whom I know & I am also friends with her.) I obviously replied no, no official body would recognize it and it is (imho) a waste of money.

So, Slashdot, ideas for a (birthday) gift for someone? I guess it's not a requirement, but I think it should be better if it was not one of the common gifts (yet cheap, we're young!). (On the other hand, I know how to program, so don't exclude gifts which require a (computer) program or something [weird scenario, I know]).

Submission + - Poland attempts to recall photos leaked online from US, Germany and Russia (diplonews.com)

gale the simple writes: "In a way indicating clear misconceptions about the way the internet works, Radoslaw Sikorski, foreign relations minister in Poland is attempting to recall gruesome photos of 2010 Smolensk crash and subsequent autopsies.
Not surprisingly, Russia and Ukraine obliged in an attempt to block the offending photos on their respective territories. Polish authorities made similar attempts.
Fortunately, those were thwarted simply because Germany and the US refused to cooperate citing freedom of speech and internal laws.
Full disclosure, since I am running a blog dedicated to Smolensk crash I follow it closely and, obviously, I have the offending photos. Not surprisingly, traffic immediately increased, most of it from Poland. People do not like being told what they can see.
Radoslaw Sikorski is about to learn first hand what slashdot effect is all about."
