Seems like roughly the first time I met him as well, but in Washington DC. I met him earlier in the day at the con, and then a pretty good party that night in the con suite. I didn't see him again for a few years, but he actually saw me across the room at another con and waved, and amazingly to me, remembered my name and what we had talked about years earlier, leading in with a "I was thinking about what we talked about, and had some more ideas..." Just an amazing mind. He is very much missed.

The thing is, it might still be on the internet, just impossible to find. Without a unique enough name, or something else that brings it up higher in the search listings, you'll never come across it. It's already bad enough that a search for some piece of hardware has 8 pages of ads for places selling something that might be sort of like the old hardware you're looking for. Search engines really turned to shit.

I got my first home computer in 1983, but it was a Apple ][ clone, with a blatantly ripped off copy of the Apple ROM in it. It was a great machine though. Came with a floppy drive, 80 column card, and even a CPM card. That computer got me my first job as well, as I ended up working for a Apple/Commodore/Compaq dealer because of it. Good times.

Years ago in leading up to a class reunion, for a while they wanted us to sign up for a classmates.com account. At the time it was free, or you at least had more functionality with it. They changed around the membership levels or something, and wanted you to pay for the same level of service. After a while, you'd start getting bogus emails saying "hey, someone wants really to connect with you.", but you can only see who if you get a paid account.

This. I think I liked the keyboard on my 2011 a little better, but my 2015 is likely the last Apple product I'll ever buy. The new laptops are horrible to work on. I just don't think Apple has anyone there in power to do what needs to be done and change the design for the better. They'd rather just cater to some crowd that prefers form over function.

I still have mine that I bought then, and use it daily. I bought a second for $40 locally, and have both turned vertical, flanking a Dell 27" from a a few years later. Paid $80 for it. It gives me quite a bit of real estate.

The downside to all these is the power/heat. I can really feel it when I'm working for long periods. The newer 27" monitors I have at work barely get warm.

I'd assume that you apply for Apple Credit to buy some pricey item, and you are actually getting a credit card with your purchase already on it, along with enough rope to hang yourself. Apple has had credit cards since I was working in computer stores since at least 1984. A ton of people bought those original Macs on them, and it never stopped. Some crazy interest rate too. I'm sure they made bank on them.

I've had a handful that I've used for projects. Right now, the three I am running:

I have a dedicated music player in the house. I added a small DAC board, and run Rune.

I do something similar in my car, but use a touchscreen and a different interface that I wrote.

I made one into a pi-hole, and then made a few additional pi-holes that I gave to friends.

I would in a heartbeat. It seems that unless you work for a company large enough to get transferred to Europe, it's not really possible. I guess there are restrictions about companies hiring outside the EU unless they can prove need. Unlike the H1B sham we use in the US.

You can be a productive doctor until you're six feet under. A software engineer over 40 is considered used up by a lot of companies, and it only gets worse as you get older. Obviously not in all cases, but I hear about it a lot in the industry. When I was working in hospitals, I never heard anything similar from the staff there.
