Submission + - Using GIMP for real-world print jobs? 1

An anonymous reader writes: I made the switch to Linux several years ago and, for me, it's great. However, when it comes to creating printed materials for clients, I still outsource to a local artist who uses Photoshop or Illustrator. This has been fine but now I need to create some CMYK eps or pdf files that are suitable for real-world printing. The files will not be printed in house. Instead, they are sent out to some print company who will run the job and mail the finished product. Obviously I will get a physical proof before running a 10K piece order but I want to minimize changes later by using the tools correctly the first time around.

Searching the Net leads me to believe that doing anything in Scribus or GIMP for CMYK is going to be a challenge. Are there any professionals out there using only FOSS tools to create CMYK-ready eps/pdf files for offsite printing? If so, what advice can you offer to help me go about this the right way and minimize post-proof changes. My largest concerns are color shift, sharpness (high dpi?), and edge bleeds (is 1/8th inch enough?).

Submission + - Which Android Phone is Less Evil? 2

An anonymous reader writes: My cellphone contract expired and I'm ready to splurge on an Android phone. It seems the four best models at this time are: HTC Nexus One, Samsung Galaxy S, Motorola Droid X, and HTC Evo.

Which is the best Android phone to buy to "vote with my wallet" for FOSS, unencumbered hardware ownership, and good telecom behavior?

HTC sold out to Microsoft. And so did Samsung. Motorola to my knowledge has not sold out to MS, but the Droid is on the network that wants to charge ridiculous amounts to do stuff like tethering on a supposed unlimited data plan. (And it's CDMA so I can't use it if I ever get to take vacations again and travel out of the US.)

Games Workshop Sues Warhammer Online Fansite 182

chalkyj writes "WarhammerAlliance.com (run for the last five years as one of the leading fansites for the MMORPG Warhammer Online) is being sued by Games Workshop for the use of the 'Warhammer' name, 'cybersquatting' and 'unfair competition.' This lawsuit is yet another in Games Workshop's disturbing pattern of suing their fans and hobbyists, this time going after a legitimate fansite for their MMORPG franchise. The full complaint (PDF) has been posted online."

I couldn't find anything that is, definitionally, "computer tampering" through a judicious use of Google.

Submission + - Singularity Summit Videos Now Available (singularitysummit.com) 2

zerosomething writes: Videos from the October Singularity Summit 2009 have finally been posted for those of us unable to attend. Speakers include the usual suspects Peter Thiel and Ray Kurzweil plus other well know thinkers like Abubery de Grey and Stephen Wolfram and a host of other apparently intelligent people. What ever you may think of the truth or myth of smarter than man technology there are a number of big names working to pave the way.

Submission + - OS X Update does not disabled hackintoshes (wired.com)

UnknowingFool writes: In a followup to the story that OS X 10.6.2 update would break hackintoshes, the latest developer's build from Apple appears to run fine on Atom processors. While Apple has not officially commented about the event, there are likely scenarios.
  1. Apple deliberately disabled Atom processor support. Faced with bad PR, they reversed their position.
  2. Apple unintentionally introduced bugs that disabled Atom support. Realizing this later, Apple developers quietly fixed it.

Submission + - Modern Warfare 2 - Infinity Ward Hates You (arstechnica.com) 2

Zarrot writes: Modern Warfare 2 was one of the most anticipated titles of the year. I, personally, have been anticipating this game for almost a year months. No longer... It is a slap in the face to PC Gamers what Infinity Ward has done with this title. No dedicated servers, no server admin, cannot kick hackers, no mods, no maps, no community, no customization, no respect... The author is right if we as a gaming community if we do not stand against this sort of behavior, this is the future of PC Gaming. I'm boycotting until they listen to their community of players and address this madness. I encourage everyone else to do the same.
